Summer in Eastern DRC

Hard at work-Amandine & friends
Hard at work-Amandine & friends

Friends of CCD,

Improving the health of children is a community effort! Over the summer, as the kids enjoy their break, we have been very encouraged by teachers', parents’ and children’s enthusiasm. As we have been told by a teacher (Amandine, third from the left) – “This simple Soap distribution and Education program will improve the chances of our kids living to get their high school diplomas”. Here is what we have been up to in the last 4 months:

  • Assisted in the construction of a well in two tiny villages on the south Kivu area
  • Used local clinics and hospitals as central locations to reach out to parents and children
  • Joined Water and Sanitation projects headed by small local NGOs.

In the future, we are considering programming a weekly radio broadcast at 3 local radio stations to disseminate hygiene and sanitation information. In Baraka and surrounding areas, about 90% of the population has access to radio either directly or through a neighbor, which means that we would have the potential to reach more than 180,000 people every week.

Any contribution to this radio project would be greatly appreciated, please share with friends and family! Thank you for the continued support you have shown us.

Rain, Mud, and Curious Faces in Eastern DRC

CCD
CCD's Merry Companions

Dear donors,

The holidays have been over for a while. Now, the rainy season is in full swing in Eastern DRC, and it brings with it the challenges of bad driving conditions due to extremely muddy dirt roads. Still, our Consortium Congo volunteers soldier on as they work to reach parents and children in various areas such as Baraka, Uvira and Fizi to reassess the current water and sanitation-related needs of the local families living there. And luckily, there were lots of villagers and passersby who were very helpful when staff and volunteers were stuck on muddy roads.

On one of these trips through South-Kivu, we encountered a band of merry, bright, and curious 5 to 10 year old companions, who will hopefully make it safely through the rainy season, thanks to your continued support for this project.

Please continue to spread the word about CCD to help us eradiate waterborne diseases in Congo!

Thank you for your support.

Back to School in Eastern DRC

Parents in Baraka
Parents in Baraka

Hi!

School has been back in session for a few weeks now and that means thousands of kids, from kindergarten through high school, are going back to learning new things and sharing new experiences with others. It also means that more than ever, the kids will need accurate and simple information on how and where to get clean water, clean their hands, and stay healthy.

Over the summer, we provided a few teachers with pamphlets, posters, purification tablets and soap to ensure they were ready for the new school year. In the first few days of school, we met with a few young children’s parents, who were beaming with joy and pride as they watched their children go to school, and got reassurance that the water they will drink while at school will be safe.

We are encountering challenges acquiring enough resources to share with beneficiaries, so please continue to spread the word about the project so that we can continue our work!

Thanks for your support
