No one went hungry!

In the months following the Holiday Season, BTAC's donations decrease dramatically.  Whether busy with New Years' resolutions, worrying about paying for the holiday gifts, preparing for taxes, etc., people don't think about donating food until a few months into the New Year.

Although we appreciate the slow-down of activity after a VERY busy holiday season, BTAC never stops providing food for those who are in need.  Through donations made this past quarter, coupled with residual food from the holidays, BTAC's shelves have been well stocked.  In fact, just yesterday, our Pantry Manager, Edward told the staff he was in an unusual place.  In previous years, in April, he would have to cut back on the amount of food given out in grocery orders.  Not so for 2013!

What a relief!  And it wouldn't have happened without your generous support.

Thank you very much!

Long lines for Homeless Lunches

Each day at about 10:30 a.m. the line for lunches begins to grow.  It snakes along the sidewalk in front of Burbank Tempoary Aid Center, almost to the end of the block.

In the line are many we might consider "typical homeless", the men we see on benches, at intersections, etc. around town.  But interspersed in the group are a growing number of women, families and seniors.  One man explained that he and his 54 year old mother were homeless.  This took me aback, because she and I are the same age.  I couldn't begin to imagine what it would feel like to be homeless as I approach my retirement years.

These humble people come everyday to pick up the sack lunch provided by BTAC.  Often, it is the only meal of thier day.  Thanks to your support, we are able to meet the need, offering substantial sack lunches for the homeless.

We hear their thanks every day, but I want to pass it along to you.  Because without you, we couldn't do it.

Shelter helps bridge a gap!

When a family is homeless, it is hard to care for the children and thier needs.  Without shelter, thier world can be turned upside down.  Parents feel as if they are letting down thier children and they can become depressed and despondent, which makes it harder for them to improve thier situation.

Recently,  a family came to Burbank Temporary Aid Center for assistance.  While providing them shelter in a local hotel, our case manager was able to help them apply to a program specially designed for homeless families.

After three nights of having a clean bed, the ability to appropriately take care of personal hygiene needs, and know they were save, thier spirits had improved.  Then, they recieved word that they had been accepted into the program, which would help them further in thier hopes to achieve permanent housing.

A few nights in a hotel that most of us might not think was great, meant a lot to this family - as it does to many others.

Thank you for making this type of service possible.
