With your help, we made it through the summer!

As the years have gone by, doesn't it seem that time passes much more quickly?  Yet, I'm still surprised when the summer ends and we begin to think of the holiday season.

As I was walking through our warehouse yesterday, our shelves were bare in several places, but not as bare as in years past.  You see, the summer puts a strain on our pantry.  Mothers, who have been able to count on the subsidized school lunch programs for their children, now need to cover this at home.  Burbank Temporary Aid Center sees a marked increase of need during the summer months.  Sometimes, by the end of the year, our food stock is almost depleted.  But this year, it wasn't.

Because of friends like you, BTAC was able to keep up with the need for food during the lean summer months.  Local grocers made donations, churches collected canned goods, and where we did run short, your donation allowed us to purchase those things we needed.

I hope you feel good, knowing you were able to help us maintain our food supply and keep families from going hungry!

Although our shelves are now a bit bare, we know that as the holidays approach, you and many of our other friends will remember the continuing need and make certain BTAC has the food, (especially the holiday food) necessary to ensure the holidays are filled with warmth, family and wonderful, traditional meals.

Thanks again for your support.  It is appreciated and we do not take it for granted.

One meal a day, for many

Over the past several years, along with the increased need for services, Burbank Temporary Aid Center staff and volunteers have also seen a decline in the number of organizations serving the homeless.

The homeless in the Burbank community have gone from being able have a hot meal at the local (now closed) soup kitchen and then getting a sack lunch from BTAC, to only having the sack lunch.  How many of us would be happy with only one meal per day?

With your help, BTAC has been able to purchase additional items for the lunches, to help them last longer and be more filling.  At the same time, our Pantry Manager tries to find affordable yet healthful items, such as fresh fruits and veggies, non-carbonated beverages, etc.

These additional items are especially important  for the weekends, when BTAC is closed.  We try to 'beef up' our lunches with extra items that will help our homeless friends for a few extra days.

A sack lunch may seem rather simple, but when it is your only meal for the entire day, it is a treasure.  And each day, BTAC provides more than 75 of these treasured lunches.  Thank you for helping provide these lunches, by sharing of your own personal 'treasure.

Hunger doesn't take a Summer Vacation

For me, summer vacation brings back memories of lazy summer days in rural Minnesota.  Swimming in the lake, riding bikes along the dirt roads and planting and harvesting from our family's garden.  One memory I don't have is of being hungry.

For many children, it is the opposite.  During the school year, low-income children benefit from free and reduced lunch programs in the schools.  Some schools even have breakfast programs!  This takes a huge strain off of families who are struggle to pay rent, insurance, car payments, etc.  But when school dismisses for the summer, that changes.

I can't imagine how it feels to worry about feeding my children.  And with your donation, you are helping ensure that many parents don't have that worry.  Thank you.

Your contribution means a great deal to everyone at BTAC.  We appreciate your generousity, as well as your trust in our ability to use it well.

Thanks,

Barbara Howell
