We are  grateful  with all the people that  in this period made donations to our project, thanks with all our heart to all of you

We are very happy with all the events that happened in the last 3 months and with the ones that are going to happen in the last part of these year

During October we celebrate the Halloween festivities with the children in two different  activities, the ones that are bigger than  6  were invited to a Spa and the little ones  had a costume party, those were wonderful days.

On November 20th was our 10th anniversary and we celebrate this special date with a big cake and a party with the kids on the house of the  foundation

We also made a big presentation a talent show performed by children on the 8th of December in a school close to pintando caminos, in that show participated 90 kids, they danced, sang, made a puppet presentation was a very good day, the people that support us also were there  was a big party with 400 persons

The kids finished the scholar year many  of them with very good grades, which means for us that our program of writing and reading is working

We are also satisfied because we accomplish our goal of donations, THANKS GLOBAL GIVING, THANKS  TO ALL  WHO DONATED, we hope we can be more time with global giving, because what they did for us was amazin

Music and Soccer Teachers

Over the last three months we have continued working hard to meet the kids educational needs by working to improve writing and reading skills. This has been a hard task, but we have very good results with most of the children – at least they are happy discovering they are capable of improving their skills. We are very satisfied because they are changing the way they think, opening up to the idea that they can do things in a different way.

In these last trimester we did some good activities and projects with the kids. We received some musical instruments as donations from collection that a teenager in a Miami school made. So far we have 2 electric guitars, 2 acoustic guitars, and 1 piano. Without a music instructor, so far we’ve done fun activities were the kids have to make music instruments out of recycled material. Now we are looking for money to hire a music teacher work regularly at Pintando Caminos, maybe even to help the kids form  musical groups that play Salsa or Cumbia!

We are also pleased to report that we received a donation in the form of soccer uniforms and soccer balls. With the soccer school currently on hold, we have taken the children to a hill about 40 minutes from Pintando Caminos where there is plenty of open space with grass for the kids to play. Until the soccer school starts up again this has been a good activity to keep up the enthusiasm for soccer and physical exercise.

We are still trying to find and hire a soccer coach for Pintando Caminos and re-open the soccer school. It’s important that the kids learn to enjoy and spend free time doing good things because the potential for involvement in gang activity or different kinds of addictions is very real – the key is giving them alternative opportunities that are fun and healthy.

An external foundation donated some glasses for the children as well, which was nice. At this time we’ve already begun preparations for the big Halloween party. For Christmas we always throw a big celebration where we have presents for every child, so we’ve started the planning for the Christmas gifts as well.

GlobalGiving visits Pintando Caminos in Bogota

Lunchtime!
Lunchtime!

As my cab inched up the mountains that surround Bogota, Colombia, I looked down over a city that is home to about 9 million people.  I was with Carol Mondragon, GlobalGiving’s Ambassador in Colombia, and Alexandra Tamara, the founder of Pintando Caminos.  We passed yoga studios and nice restaurants as we headed up the mountains to one of the poorest areas of Bogota.  During the hour-long journey, Alexandra told me about the history of the area, which is marred by gangs, violence, and the after effects of Colombia’s past political unrest.  She told me the unlikely story of her transformation from a high-powered lawyer who never wanted children, to head of a non-profit living and working with close to 250 children in Ciudad Bolivar.

When we finally reached the Pintando Caminos building, a stream of children ran out and their eyes lit up and when they saw Alexandra.  They immediately began hugging and kissing us.  These were kids who were happy to be there!  The excitement soon died down and the kids went back to their work.  They were busy doing their homework, pouring over books and math problems.  The homework support is just one of the programs that Pintando Caminos runs for the neighborhood community.

Soon we saw another part of their work – the lunch program.  When homework hours ended, the children left and the real work began.  A woman in the building’s small kitchen began cooking up a storm – huge vats of rice, salad, meat, and potatoes.  Over 200 children came in 15 minute shifts over the next hour and a half for a plate of hot lunch.

Alexandra explained that Pintando Caminos is different.  Their philosophy is based on love, but that doesn’t mean the children don’t have to work, too.  While many organizations work in Ciudad Bolivar handing out food, organizing sports teams, and setting up arts activities, Pintando Caminos is teaching real skills and putting importance on education as a way to a better life – not just giving a hand out.

I sat with the kids during lunch as they wolfed down their food, played with their friends, and joked with the staff.  This was a happy place with a committed and passionate staff.  I left grateful for the opportunity to get an insight into the amazing work this organization is doing and proud that GlobalGiving had such a great partner organization in Bogota.

If you’d like to support Pintando Caminos again, today (Wed, June 13, 2012) is a great day to do it.  For every $1 to give, GlobalGiving will kick in another 30%!
