Stepping Ahead in Thailand Even as The Quinleys Step Back.

Sometimes You Have to Step Back to Step Ahead.

That's essentially what three pastors from our supporting churches told us last year.  Yet, when they said it, we wondered,  "How could such a thing possibly happen?"
Well, miraculously it has happened on this amazing sabbatical.  We have followed the Trail of Patrick around Ireland and walked where Paul taught at Mars Hill in Greece, declaring the reality of "The Unknown God".  We cannot express how grateful we are for this break and time of focus on what God will call us to do next through Step Ahead.  So, for the first time in over 25 years, the Quinleys take a sabbatical to: rest, refresh, pray, read, talk, meditate, and perhaps prepare to write, and then step ahead again.
Meanwhile, it's important for you to know that the work of Step Ahead has continued forward.
Prior to heading on sabbatical Kim Taught on the Burmese Border.

Mae Sot and the area along the Burmese border is a place of untold struggle and pain for likely at least 150,000 Karen/Burmese displaced people, refugees, or asylum seekers.   Kim went to teach in a staff training school about working with vulnerable functional orphans, and doing non-institutional orphan care. In recent years, Kim has become a regional expert in this field. She is passionate for these children and families at risk.  During most of the week, Mae Sot flooded and they had to carry on mostly without electricity and running water.

John Heads to the South and Northeast.

Visiting the Keeping Families Together program, the child development centers, and the Bang Sak Training Center kept John and Kim moving forward through their jet lag in the first week back from their USA home leave trip.

After that, as Kim went to teach, John joined Step Ahead Thai staff on a visit to our Economic Development work in the Northeast of Thailand.

Training Northeast Thailand's women's groups in this poorest region builds new economic opportunities and strengthens families.

Step Ahead in Isaan Keeps Moving forward.

Buriram Economic Development Center
Buriram Economic Development Center

Last you heard that our Step Ahead Isaan Center opened in Khon Kaen, in order to challenge the unsafe and uninformed migration practices that puts teenage girls at great risk of human trafficking upon arrival in urban centers, interrupting their opportunity to study and build their futures.

Now, we have also opened in Buriram and Korat provinces in Northeast Thailand.  Step Ahead plans continued focused awareness raising, mentoring, training, and community economic development that will make steps ahead realities for families right across Isaan. Today, womens groups across Isaan are being trained to make beautiful purses that can change their economic futures.

These Community Economic Development (CED) initiatives provide economic opportunities and improve social conditions in a sustainable way and creating alternative livelihoods for the poor, through community-centered processes that blend social and economic development to foster the economic, social, ecological and cultural well-being of communities.

Thanks for standing with them as they step ahead into freedom through GlobalGiving now.

Steps Ahead in Isaan

Isaan Leaders Jub & Cori.
Isaan Leaders Jub & Cori.

After having served in Bangkok and Southern Thailand, we are so excited to be stepping ahead in Northeast Thailand!

In Northeast Thailand (Isaan), teen girls are often considered by their families as economic engines mobilized to urban centers to provide much needed income. The majority of young women in Bangkok and Pattaya bar-brothels come from Isaan. Unsafe and uninformed migration puts them at great risk of human trafficking upon arrival in urban centers, interrupting their opportunity to study and build their futures.

Step Ahead, partnering with other like-minded NGOs, plans focused awareness raising, mentoring, training, and community economic development that will make ongoing pursuit of their educations possible and practical.  We have now opened our first training center in Khon Kaen right in the middle of Northeast Thailand.

Community Economic Development (CED) is action taken locally by a community to provide economic opportunities and improve social conditions in a sustainable way. CED initiatives create alternative livelihoods for the poor, through a community-centered process that blends social and economic development to foster the economic, social, ecological and cultural well-being of communities.

You can make it happen today by standing with us on GlobalGiving now.
