Mission

MEJOR Communities (MEJORC) was founded in 2007 based on a simple idea: health creates opportunities. MEJORC stands for Managing, Executing and Joining Opportunities for Rural Communities. In Spanish, "mejor" means "better." Our mission is to provide training opportunities to rural communities so that they may make educated decisions regarding their physical and emotional health, resulting in individuals who feel invested in and capable of creating positive change in their communities. We address health challenges in rural Peru by training local youth to recognize priorities in their communities, with a focus on hygiene, nutrition and emotional health. We work with youth to provide them with opportunities at a critical point in their lives and aid them in overcoming emotional struggles caused by low self-esteem. Our end goal is to empower the communities to continue benefiting from the knowledge they gain through MEJORC's support long after we've left.

Programs

We ensure our objectives are met in the following ways: - Health Education: Trained volunteers provide local youth with information about health and healthy practices, including physical health (eg. transmittable and non-transmittable illnesses, such as HIV/AIDS) and emotional health (eg. psychological issues, such as low self-esteem). - Community Outreach: Local youth, with the guidance of our trained volunteers, design and implement a community project that shares their newly acquired health knowledge. In the past, these projects have included the development of health training videos and a youth-run radio health broadcast. - Community Partnership: MEJORC works closely with local organizations to fully utilize our resources and maximize our impact on surrounding areas. Previously, we partnered with MIRHAS-Perú, an organization dedicated to creating healthy rural habitats by actively involving the community. Our current partner, Expand Perú, provides basic emotional support to children and teenagers in social risk and in a state of abandonment living in urban and rural areas of Perú. Our projects are year-long health education programs that are implemented in a rural village in Peru. The program involves: - Development of a curriculum with health information relevant to community needs - The formation of local youth advocates for health (YHA) - Development and implementation of a community project through YHA - Increase community members’ knowledge about health - Strengthening local partnership with Expand-Perú's CASA program - Partnering with local governmental agencies to gain support for the community
