Komera

The Komera Project supports girls secondary education in Rwanda by providing mentoring and financial support to girls in Rwanda for whom secondary education is otherwise not possible. As girls continue their education, they improve their earning potential, their health and their sense of self-worth thereby enabling them to break the bonds of poverty. The Komera Project also engages students in the United States. Students can participate in achieving the Komera mission through our Run to Rwanda curriculum, an interactive program of educational materials and sponsored fun run/walks.

Komera Global Run 2014

The 2014 Komera Global Run was a great success! We had major runs in four US cities (San Francisco, Seattle, New York, and Boston), plus a run at Green Farms Academy in Connecticut and at a primary school in China. Additionally, there were individuals as well as small groups running in Rockport, MA; Pittsburgh, PA; France, Indonesia, and Guatemala.

Komera raised over $130,000 from the 2014 Komera Global Run, $85,000 more than we raised in 2013!  However, our true progress can be shown through the large increases in race participants and corporate sponsors from 2013 to 2014.

The most impactful and significant stats are those from Rwanda. Komera has found that the run has become a powerful tool to teach the scholars about community building, goal setting and self-achievement. In 2014 we had over 300 young women come out and run with us. It was an incredible experience, and we are so excited for what the 2015 Komera Global Run has in store for us!

You did a phenomenal job!

Dear friends!

We are thrilled to let you know that all of our scholars had the opportunity to go to Kigali and visit schools, have lunch, do a mini tour of the city, and recieve their holiday gifts, thanks to your generosity!

We ended up taking two separate trips to Kigali as when we took the current Komera Scholars, the graduates were still completing their mandatory government service. Just over two weeks ago, our 2013 Komera Graduates went on their trip and visited the Akilah Insitute, a local training center for beauticians and Women For Women's Opportunity Center.

In addition to the trips to Kigali, the scholars were given dictionaries, underwear and a small monetary gift to purchase whatever they felt was necessary for their own personal wardrobe. I wish all of you could have been there to see the absolute delight in their eyes as they received their gifts. Thank you!!!

We have just started the 2014 school year with 15 new Komera Scholars. We are excited to see what this year holds and we can't wait to share the news with you.

Thank you so much for your continued support, it means the world to us.

With best regards,

Margaret
