Child Labor Awareness Meeting
Child Labor Awareness Meeting

Dear Esteemed supporters and Friends,

Greetings to you from Health Education Adoption Rehabilitation Development Society (HEARDS)!

With all your valuable support and guidance the rehabilitation centre is going on with all happiness and the children are doing well in our rehabilitation centre.  We are very much thankful to all our generous donors who have spent their valuable time and money and coordinated everything for our children with their months and years of hard work. The result is, children are very happy and they are in our rehabilitation centre now, enjoying their time with their learning process and also growing each day with the skills needed for their life.

We have been able to continue this valuable mission with the generous help extended to us.  The major achievement of this project is that importance of education has been well understood by the children and their parents which is evident in sending their children promptly to the rehabilitation centre and in discussing the progress of their children in studies with the teachers.

We give a brief description of the various activities carried out during the past academic year.

INCENTIVES

All the children who were enrolled in our centre were provided with 2 sets of school uniform along with that the education materials like note books, slates, pens, pencils, drawing books, time table books etc. for the children.  We were also provided school bags for the children to carry their educational material.  They were also provided with sports materials like carom, chess, ring, skipping ropes etc.

PROVIDING EDUCATION

Education plays a vital role as this was the major task of our staff with a broad view of making our children to equalize their educational standards with the regular school going children.  With the painstaking effort of our staff we were able to achieve our goal of bring back the children’s educational standard to the level of regular school going children.  All our staff has paid a lot of effort in bringing out the academic excellence of our children.  For this we have adopted several methodologies like seeing and understanding strategy, listening and understanding strategy, grouping of children according to their educational standards, systematic combined study, day-to-day review of the lessons have made the children increased interest in their studies.

COMPUTER TRAINING

During the earlier days of the project this computer serves as a primary component to initiate interest among the children in their studies.  So we provide computer games during the initial stages of the project.  Slowly they get more interest in sitting in front of computers and once they are interested we used to provide computer based tutorials in English and Mathematics.  Computers have become an easy learning component for children.  Most of the children in our centre learnt English and mathematics through computers.  This is an essential tool to make children interest in studies as well as serves as a easy teaching methodology among children.

MID-DAY MEAL PROGRAMME

Children at our Rehabilitation Centre receive free, daily lunches, prepared by our employed cook in the rehabilitation centre. Children are provided with nutritious food like boiled rice with vegetables, dhal and pulses.  Once in a week they were also provided with eggs.  During the evening hours they were provided with biscuits.  . Children at our rehabilitation centre look healthy and active throughout the year.

AWARENESS PROGRAMS

Conducted awareness generation programs on elimination of child labor through meetings for women groups, youth groups and school going children.  We also have distributed leaflets and pasted posters in order to sensitize, and plan for the activities to be conducted for the Automobile Workshop, Hotel industry, Construction Industry, factories, Shops and Establishments with the motto of “Stop Child labour”.

CONCLUSION

With the activities as explained during this reporting period was an eventful period concerning the promotion and protection of child rights and providing quality education to the poor and downtrodden children.  We are extremely happy as these poor children gets good education and moral support.  All the Staff of HEARDS has put their painstaking effort and commitment for the growth of the rehabilitation center.  And also this project reduces Child labor, Child delinquency and improves the knowledge, skill and potentialities and become useful future citizens of the nation.

Inspiring Teachers use Innovative Techniques

The HEARDS teachers
The HEARDS teachers

The following is a postcard from Neeharika Tummala, GlobalGiving's In-the-Field Representative in India and Bangladesh, about her recent visit to Health Education Adoption Rehabilitation Development Society (HEARDS).

In India, teaching methods can get a little dry. I usually see kids memorizing and repeating and while that works, teachers at HEARDS are not just about teaching their kids, but leveraging games, activities and innovative methods to teach their students as effectively as possible. The children at HEARDS are rescued child labourers and so come with varied levels of ability and education. So, the teachers have the challenge of dealing with a mixed abilities classroom and teaching multiple subjects so that they are mainstreamed into public schools at grade 8.

I unexpectedly went during a state wide ‘bandh’ or public holiday for protests against state separation, so I could not meet students in class, but I still met teachers from two schools who gave me a complete overview of their curriculum and some of the activities that they use. The cook from one of the schools, has a child who is a HEARDS student and spoke about her experience. In the beginning her child used to work as well, but she is now really happy that her child is getting an education. The teachers also spoke about their advocacy work where they actively survey the community, and speak to factory owners to let go of their child labours if any. They even speak to the parents to educate them about the importance of education and do as much as possible to get the kids to school. They often face pushback, dismissal and even threats, but it doesn’t stop them from going back. They also spoke about the transformation of their children and that when they first come in, they don’t have the awareness of keeping their uniforms and bodies clean, and their role as teachers involves not just education inside classroom but also imparting life skills. This is what I call above-and-beyond service and commitment to children’s education.

Children of Prashant Nagar Colony Centre
Children of Prashant Nagar Colony Centre

Dear Respective Donors,

Greetings to you from HEARDS - India!

Training Programme and meeting for Staff and Teachers

A full day workshop was organized for the staff and teachers on the Right to Education (RTE) act, where we discussed in details how to carry forward the spirit of the law in the communities where we are presently involved.  A staff meeting is held every month to reorient the staff, so that they gradually give up the black board method of teaching and enhance their own capacity to take up the issues and matters, which affect the daily life of the children. The teachers teach how to cope with the hazardous working environment and also how to take precautionary measures to avoid mishaps and sickness.

Infrastructure Development & Uniform Distribution:

HEARDS with the support of donors like you provided the classrooms with ceiling fans so that the children feel easy and comfortable and get motivated to study. They were also provided uniforms for their daily wear in school. These valuable gestures by donors is a way of making these deprived children that they are also important and have the right of being happy like other normal children.

Incentives

Children are provided with the education materials like bags, note books, copy writing books, slates, pens, pencils, etc. along with the educational calendars which help efficiently in learning basic calculations and also to learn easily English and Telugu language (the local language).

EDUCATION

The child labor rehabilitation center run for 7-8 hours a day, six days a week except second Saturdays. Using HEARDS specially developed Accelerated Bridge Course, the children were given intensive educational support to bring them up to the level necessary for them to be integrated into age appropriate classes. Progress was reinforced through regular revision and testing throughout the year. Support for children with learning difficulties – Teachers in both the centers provided one-to-one support for slow-learners or those with learning difficulties.

Computer Training for Children

It was happy that there was an additional educational component for the children.  Two Computers were purchased along with the computer table and chairs.  The children were started to give training on computers and all the children were very much happy to learn computers. We have a teacher who has undergone six months training on computer operation, word, excel, power point, drawings and painting and other general function of computer. At present this teacher were teaching basics of computers to the children. This programme has created more enthusiasm among children to learn more in education and also in computers.  I assure you that this programme will help the children to be a computer literate and they can able to perform basic operations in computers before leaving this rehabilitation center.

Mid-day Meal

Mid day meal is also one of the important motivational factor for parents to send their children to the rehabilitation center.  Children in the center were given good nutritious food like rice with dhal, vegetables, pulses and leafy vegetables in all the working days.  Eggs were provided once in a week to the children to make them healthier.  The cook will follow the nutrition menu according to the guidance of the project coordinator and the center teachers.

Conclusion

We are happy to state that our effort of giving a new life to many deprived children is bearing fruits as seen in the performance of children in various exams and the number of children we were able to educate. We are grateful to all our various donors.
