Pathfinder International

Pathfinder's mission is to ensure that people everywhere have the right and opportunity to live a healthy sexual and reproductive life. We believe that reproductive health is essential for creating better opportunities throughout life. When people take charge of choices about when and how often to have children, they not only have the opportunity to lead healthier lives, but they also gain confidence and can better pursue their education, contribute to the local economy, and engage in their communities.

Income Generation Activity for Ethiopian Women

GlobalGiving Report

March 2014 – May 2014

BACKGROUND

Pathfinder International and its partner, the Addis Ababa Women’s Association, received funding from generous GlobalGiving donors to support low-income women to engage in income-generating activities (IGAs) to increase self-sufficiency and productivity. With the support of these donors, 97 low-income Ethiopian women have started their own businesses. Each woman was provided business skills training, in addition to information on issues like sexual and reproductive health, reproductive rights, family planning, HIV and AIDS, and harmful traditional practices. Beneficiaries are engaged in various types of businesses including poultry, small-scale restaurants, vegetable gardening, petty trade, animal fattening and dry foods preparation. Testimonials from beneficiaries demonstrated that GlobalGiving support continues to bring about positive change in the lives of these women and their families by providing household food security, the ability to send their children to school, personal satisfaction, and control over their own income.

UPDATE

As we have reported earlier this year, the generous support of the GlobalGiving donors has been used to help a group of 30 women who created a restaurant business together in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. You may recall that the group suffered a setback when a fire engulfed their warehouse. The project provided about 30,000 Birr to help rebuild this warehouse and the attached restaurant.

During this reporting period, Pathfinder visited the project beneficiaries who were able to restart their business despite the scarcity of kitchen utensils.  Given the nominal amount of funds received during this reporting period, the GlobalGiving project was not able to award another grant to the project beneficiaries. We will allocate donations received during March-May 2014 to June-August 2014 activities.

Educate and Empower Ethiopian Girls - June 2014

BACKGROUND

GlobalGiving donors have generously supported Pathfinder International’s project to empower women and girls in Ethiopia by providing scholarships for their continued education to mitigate their risk of dropping out and to build their life and leadership skills. Since May 2008, Pathfinder has recruited 104 female students from poor families through its GlobalGiving project, Educate and Empower Ethiopian Girls. In total, 77 girls from Addis Ababa and 27 girls from the Amhara region have received scholarship assistance and orientation on youth reproductive health issues.

UPDATE

During this reporting period, 20 students from the Amhara region received scholarship extensions that provided tuition support for five months. These vulnerable female students were on the verge of quitting school unless support was provided. Thanks to the timely support of this project, they are able to continue with their education. The number of girls on scholarship in Addis Ababa remained the same (77) during the reporting period, although some beneficiaries are in need of the extension of their financial support. Because of the limited funding available, Pathfinder Ethiopia prioritized support to the more vulnerable girls in the Amhara region who were also victims of forced marriages.

In addition to the extension of scholarship assistance in this reporting period, follow-up visits were done in the Amhara region and in Addis Ababa to assess the status of scholarship beneficiaries. Findings showed that all students in Amhara were doing well and attending classes, with improved academic performance. A majority of the girls also participate in school clubs (mainly in gender clubs), becoming advocates for girls’ education and the prevention of harmful traditional practices in their communities. They are also playing vital roles in the promotion of youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services.

Continuing the effort to empower scholarship beneficiaries on adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health (AYSRH) issues and assertiveness skills, Pathfinder organized training for the 26 girls in Addis Ababa. The training was provided for three days by experts from Addis Ababa Health Bureau and the Pathfinder Ethiopia AYSRH team. The training also provided the opportunity to introduce the girls to health experts who could serve as role models and mentors in the future.

GlobalGiving Report

December 2013 – February 2014

Testimonials from beneficiaries demonstrated that GlobalGiving support continues to bring about positive change in the lives of these women and their families by providing household food security, the ability to send their children to school, personal satisfaction, and control over their own income.

UPDATE

As mentioned in our last report, GlobalGiving donors provided seed money to 15 women who lost their small dry foods preparation business—known locally as a Baltina shop—due to an accidental fire. This report period has seen significant progress made in recovering their business.

The storehouse where our beneficiaries kept their dry goods has been re-constructed with financial resources collected through the coordination of the Woreda administration. Community members and other charity organizations contributed towards the re-construction of the house. With a restored space, the beneficiaries have been able to re-open their business by purchasing the necessary materials such as cooking dishes, utensils, tables, and chairs with funds donated through GlobalGiving. Excitingly, they have seen an increase in their customers. Additionally, the Addis Ababa Women’s Association is coordinating with the Woreda Micro-Finance Development Office to organize the beneficiaries into a cooperative group in order to attain legal status.Attaining this status will gain them access to ongoing training and loan services. This office also helps the women secure their workplace and provides other relevant support like market assessments—all of these services help them to build a sustainable business.
