Achon Uganda Children's Fund

Mission The Achon Uganda Children's Fund (AUCF) was established in 2007 by two-time Olympic runner Julius Achon in response to the dire situation faced by the residents of his home village, Awake, in Otuke District in Northern Uganda. Ravaged by the brutal Lord's Resistance Army during Uganda's two-decade civil war, the region's residents are rebuilding their lives and community - facing inadequate healthcare and education, and many children have been left without family. AUCF is committed to helping the community rebuild through improved health care and education, access to the life-enriching benefits of exercise and sport and overall self-sufficiency.

Programs

On October 1, 2012 Achon Uganda Children's Fund opened Kristina Health Center (KHC) in Awake Uganda and began treating patients providing primary healthcare to Awake and surrounding villages. KHC was designed, built, funded and managed by AUCF management in Uganda and USA. It consists of a 10 room clinic, with a bore-hole well providing water, and solar power providing electricity; a second staff quarters building houses the resident medical staff. KHC employs a full time resident staff of 5 including clinic manager, senior clinical officer, comprehensive nurses (2) and lab technician/HIV counselor providing medical care, including consultation and treatment, counseling, inoculations, education and triage of seriously ill patients to Lira Regional Hospital. KHC was built by donations raised by AUCF and is managed by AUCF Uganda. During its initial 5 months of operation, over 2,000 patients have been treated. Funds to operate KHC are provided by patient payments (approx. 60%) and augmented by AUCF donations. Due to the overwhelming response by the residents, AUCF will commence Phase II of the Kristina Health Center project, which will involve an expansion of both the site and the clinic's ability to serve the surrounding population. Phase II includes annexing an adjacent plot of land and securing the site (both completed), building an additional living quarters for an expanded staff and visiting medical professionals to support a robust volunteer program, as well as another medical building to support an expansion of services. Namely, Phase II will add an 18 bed admitting patient ward building to allow extended patient observation, treatment, and recuperation. Since many patients travel several miles for treatment, and it is not feasible for them to return for repeated treatment and observation by clinical staff, this in-patient ward will serve to improve care for higher-acuity patients.
