A Life Saved in Swat

Chief Complaint: Breathing difficulty for 1 day.

Dr. Sher Comments: Patient name Maaz resident of Swat belongs to poor family presented to us with complain of breathing difficulty from one day at 10 am. According to the parents, Maaz is asthmatic from one and half year. On presentation Maaz was quiet, serious with bluish lips, lethargic, exhausted, mild dehydrated and was not able to talk; the respiratory rate was over 60/ min and the heart rate was 160/min. This was acute emergency. We started to nebulize the patient with ventolin and oxygen inhalation, steroid medication and also we rehydrated him with IV fluids. With nebulization and oxygen inhalation, the condition of the patient improved. We kept the patient in the hospital for one day and after fully recovery, we discharged him. We saved the life of this child with the help of  supporters and staff of  CDRS, SHINE Humanity,  and IDRF.

Field Report Update

SHINE Humanity and it's affiliate Comprehensive Disaster Response Services  [CDRS] would like to wish a very Happy New Year to all our supporters and the staff of Global Giving, and we would like to thank each one of you for your unstinting support for our humanitarian  work.

Following the massive flooding in Pakistan in the summer of 2011, SHINE Humanity and it’s affiliate CDRS  have helped at least 8775  survivors of the  flooding in the southern province of Sindh with funding from Global Giving, individuals  and institutional donations. 

As mentioned in the previous report Mobile medical teams were deployed on October 1st  to some of the most remote areas in Sindh that had been badly affected by the floods. 

 In October  two medical camps were set up in the districts of Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan,Hyderabad, Badin, Jamshoro, Mirpur Khas, Sangar, Umar Kot and provided care to 5325 patients.While 3450 patients were treated in camps set up in Tando Allahyar, Kipro and Mirpur Khaas in November. 

 Free medicines were provided by the doctors  for chest infections, diarrhea, skin diseases , malaria and urinary tract infections besides other acute and chronic conditions.  Care was also provided for Dental conditions and for pregnant women. Besides free medicines and food,  baby milk formula was supplied  to 600 infants under a  Nutrition Program  and water purifying tablets were provided for making the water safe to drink. 

The beneficiaries, especially those in the most remote areas  were very grateful for the supplies, medicines and care they were being provided at the temporary camps, as was expressed by them to our staff. 

We, in turn, would like to thank all our supporters for enabling us provide the help where it is needed most.

Field Report Update

October’s Field Report (Pakistan)

 

Chikar and Namhoter, Azad Kashmir:  Our teams carried out basic health checks and provided medicines to patients.  A total of 491 patients were seen, about 43 percent of whom were children.

Shikarpur, Sindh: This tertiary care center provides in-patient care to acutely ill children. In October, we treated 1,389 children for gastro-intestinal and respiratory illnesses.

Swat, Khyber Pakhtunwa: With the help of our key donors, Canadian-based International Development and Relief Foundation and our ground partner Comprehensive Disaster Response Services (CDRS), the full service mother child health center is now in its third full month of operations. The women and children here have access to Outpatient Care, Emergency Care, a Pharmacy, a Safe Birth Center, a Laboratory, and Ultrasound facilities.  A total of 1,986 patients were taken care of, at the facility in the month of October.

Charsadda, Khyber Pakhtunwa: A new Community Healthcare Center opened its doors in Charsadda, Khyber Pakhtunwa. The Center is a collaboration between SHINE Humanity, IDRF and HEART Canada with CDRS as the implementing partner. The building was ready to be handed over by the owner on Oct 19th. The equipment, medicines, stationery, furniture and the patient beds were delivered shortly after. We were successfully able to open Outpatient Services here on October 26th and started providing medicines and initial checkups to the patients right away. By the end of the month a total of 400 patients were seen. The patient load is proved to be more than what was anticipated.

Sindh Flood Mobile Medical Team: Throughout the month of October, SHINE Humanity and its implementing partner CDRS have been providing mobile medical services to recent flood affectees in Sindh.  This follows earlier food distribution effort in September. The flood medical team has conducted medical camps in the following districts: Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Hyderabad, Badin, Jamshoro, Mirpur Khas, Sangar and Umar Kot in the last one month and treated 5,325 patients.
