On July 9, 2013 the Shashamane Sunrise team, led by our chairman Dr Rene Williamson, visited the Windsor Forest Primary to assess the work done on the reading room/library. We are excited to report that the facility has been completed and stocked with encyclopaedias and other books to assist in the education of the children. The staff however reported that they are still in need of computers which would allow for online learning.
We are also proud that our intervention programme has also borne valuable fruit, as the school’s passes in the local GSAT examination (the entry exam to high school) has moved from 39 to 78% since interventions by Shashamane Sunrise and other improvements made at the school.
During the July meeting, we had a motivational talk, social and lunch with 15 of the top students at the school, including those who were moving on to high school. We also learnt that the school had started an entrepreneurship programme whereby they are rearing chicken for sale in the community and to assist with their internal feeding programme. The principal has also appealed for help to improve the programme, which she said has immense potential.
During the social, the children performed for and with the Shash team, which included the Jamaica Station Chief, Edgar Lewis, who along with Dr Williamson urged the children to stay focused at school because education is one of the surest vehicles to take them out of poverty and help to improve their community and country.
The Shash team again visited the Windsor Forest Primary on August 23, 2013 and handed out school supplies, including exercise and hard cover note books to the students. There was also a motivational talk from local television celebrity Sanjay Ramanand, a presenter on the ‘Digicel Rising Star,’ a talent show aired on Television Jamaica.
Dr Williamson again spoke to the children about the work of Shashamane Sunrise and our desire to continue to help them with their education.
The day’s activities ended with a talk from noted painter and artist Deborah Anzinger.
