New Workshop Almost Complete

Pile of recycled wood

Hi!

I am happy to bring you a workshop construction update. REBUILD Globally has had the honor to partner with European Disaster Volunteers (EDV), an organization that provides meaningful relief and reconstruction assistance to disaster affected communities around the world.   We are working together to build the new RG workshop which gives us the capacity and space to hire 40 more artisans!  The expansion of our environmentally friendly economic development program is only due to the generosity of all of our partners and the collaboration and extremely hard work of our partner on the ground, especially EDV.

EDV is leading the construction of  our new workshop which is comprised of recycled shipping containers and existing structures on land donated by the Caribbean Lodge Hotel/Worldwide Modular Construction. We are privileged to have such wonderful partners and to be working with EDV and using volunteer labor to construct their new workshop.

Your contribution to the project of hiring artisans has changed the lives of people.  And now with our new workshop space we have the ability to do so much more.  We can not do it without you, help us hire 40 more Haitian people this year!!  The disaster also robbed many Haitians of their livelihoods, leaving them without means to rebuild their lives. Thank you for contributing to rebuilding our artisans lives.

Also, please look up REBUILD Gloablly on Facebook and 'like' our fanpage in order to get REBUILD updates!

With love from Haiti,

Julie Colombino

GlobalGiving meets REBUILD Globally in Haiti

Julie shows off a new pair of sandals
Julie shows off a new pair of sandals

My colleague Marisa and I met Julie Colombino over lunch in Port-au-Prince.  Her excitement about the work she’s doing in Haiti was contagious as she showed us the sandals that her organization is producing out of recycled tires.  Some of the shoes are given out in Haiti to those who need them, and others are sold to foreigners to help subsidize the cost of those given away.  Her organization, REBUILD Globally, is new to GlobalGiving, just recently succeeding in an Open Challenge!

She explained some of the difficulties REBUILD Globally has experienced in the past few months during start-up phase (limited funds, learning sandal design) and some of the successes (creating a great product, increasing employment in her community, keeping kids in school).

The organization currently employs 8 full-time staff (6 women and 2 men) and are paying for 25 children to remain in school through the production of the sandals.  Her dream is to expand the sales of the sandals into US markets, which would allow the organization to expand.  She’s teaching her staff to be leaders, so as the organization expands, each of them can start their own sandal-making ventures and employ more people in their communities.

We’re excited to have REBUILD Globally as a new GlobalGiving partner and hope to see more of their sandals on feet here in the US soon!

New Shoes and New Partnerships in Haiti

Sewing bags to fill with crushed rubble.
Sewing bags to fill with crushed rubble.

Dear Friends,

There are only 3 days left in the Global Giving Challenge, and we're over 80% towards the goal of $4,000 to earn a permanent position on the site.  So, we wanted to send you a quick update on what's been going on at REBUILD.

-------------

NEW SHOES
Our six artisans have hand-made about 140 'REBUILDER' tire sandals since the GlobalGiving Challenge began - even though the shop has been closed several days due to the riots related to the recent disputed election. Interested in buying a pair of REBUILDER tire sandals?  We'll be having our first Shoe Party in Orlando soon, so keep an eye out for the event announcement on our website and facebook page!

-------------

NEW PARTNERSHIPS
A few weeks ago, we were asked to partner with Builders without Borders to create a recycled straw bale house. We are helping by making bags out of old tarps that will be filled with crushed rubble to be used as the foundation of the house. The BWB mission aligns with REBUILD's as they are dedicated to developing and promoting safe, affordable, sustainable, and culturally appropriate shelter in places of need.

-------------

We still need to raise $715 to remain on the GlobalGiving.org site and work towards our ultimate goal of employing 40 Haitian earthquake victims as full-time artisans.  So we need your help to spread the word these last few days.

Together, we will REBUILD Haiti.
