Goodwill Group Foundation

The mission of Goodwill Group is to improve the quality of life of young Thai women via skills training and career services. The underlying philosophy of our organization is best found in the words of Ruby Manikan, "If you educate a man you educate a person, but if you educate a woman you educate a family."

Greetings from Goodwill Group Foundation!

Our opening day!
Our opening day!

Thank you so much for your recent donation to the Goodwill Group Foundation. Your generosity has helped us open a new set of doors to all of the women who come to us in need of something life-changing: an education. It’s because of kindhearted people like you that Goodwill Group has been able to show more than 5,000 women that brighter futures can be realized through learning. We cannot adequately put into words how much this means to us.

August 24, 2011, marked a special milestone in our history, as we celebrated the successful opening of a second branch in Ubonratchatani. Although we have not received full funding to cover all 3-years yet, we decided to open our office because there are many women waiting for our help. They have been waiting for our services. Your kind donation are still wamly welcome. Your donation will not only change women’s lives, it also stops an entire cycle of poverty in its tracks. When a woman has free access to resources such as the skills training and career services offered at Goodwill, she’s able to escape that cycle. As she lifts herself out of poverty, she also lifts her family and community.

Women from poor provinces like Ubonratchatani often seek work in Bangkok but, more often than not, they fall into unsafe and unfulfilling jobs. Our goal is to provide the essential skill sets and support systems they will need upon arrival in Bangkok. Services in Ubonratchathani will include career consultation, employment placement, computer workshops, English language courses and vocational training. All programs will be designed to empower Thai women and support them in becoming business professionals, entrepreneurs and service workers.

In the meantime, you can visit www.goodwillbangkok.org, Twitter or Facebook. We constantly update our pages with pictures, posts and our newsletter. Again, we are sincerely appreciative for making our dream come to fruition, and we hope you know that your donations are helping to change lives every day here in Thailand.

With gratitude,

The Goodwill Group Team

Please Help Us Open Our Project!

Our new Office in Ubon Ratchathani
Our new Office in Ubon Ratchathani

Sawassdee kah to all our supporters!

We have news to share with you!

We’re Getting Closer…Please Help Us Open Our New Project!

We are about half way towards opening the doors to our second Goodwill branch in Ubon Ratchanthani, the second poorest province in Northeast Thailand. We have raised $97,800 USD but we still need more in order to fund the first three years of the branch’s launch. Please help us get closer to our dream!

Many of Goodwill’s students came from this area the same way thousands do every year. There aren’t any schools in the outskirts of Ubon Ratchathani and there are practically no jobs, besides, for example, sporadic rice farming for $4 a day. Therefore, it’s practically inevitable that women will move to Bangkok in search of better opportunities. Our goal is to educate the women in Ubon Ratchathani and provide them with the skill set and support system they’ll need upon arrival in Bangkok. If we don’t reach them in Ubon Ratchathani, it’s a lot more likely that women from this region will fall into unsafe and unfulfilling jobs.

Since Goodwill operates with merely five employees and about 40 volunteers, your donations go straight to the cause. Here are a few examples of how your contributions will make an impact:

$10 USD pays for one woman’s classroom expenses for four months
$25 USD provides training materials and supplies needed for proper instruction of a vocational course
$50 USD buys desks and chairs for an entire classroom of students
$100 USD helps us keep the students’ computer lab up-to-date with a fax machine, scanner or printer
$250 USD pays for one qualified instructor (previous instructors have come from Thai Red Cross)
$500 USD pays for three trainings (cosmetology, first aid, basic self-defense and etc.)
$1,000 USD buys a new computer for the students’ computer lab (we currently have eight PCs)
$3,000 USD pays for about one year’s rent in Ubon Ratchanthani

2011 is Goodwill Group’s tenth year in operation and we hope it’s another memorable one. Thanks to everyone’s generous donations, we are getting closer to our dream of expanding our charitable services to disadvantaged Thai girls and women in Ubon Ratchathani, the second poorest province in Northeast Thailand. Many uneducated women are in need of our services because they migrate to Bangkok to find better paying jobs but lack the necessary education or skills. For some women, the Goodwill experience can be the difference between finding gratifying careers and falling into dangerous jobs. That’s why we’re committed to opening the office as soon as possible. Our goal is to find the funding to support the first three years of the new branch.

At our Bangkok office, Goodwill recently won a grant from Starbucks and will organize the “Life Inspiration” project for disadvantaged girls and women in Bangkok. The project, which starts next month, will inspire and teach women to jumpstart their careers and launch their own small businesses. We also continue to organize training workshops for our students. In the past months, we have organized basic self defense training, CPR and first aid training, Microsoft Word training, bead jewelry workshop, housekeeping training workshop, make-up training for personality development, knitting training, crochet training, and reproductive health workshop for our students.

Thanks, again, for your kind donations. On behalf of everyone on the Goodwill Group team, we wish you all the best for the coming year. If you come to Bangkok, please feel free to visit us at our office!

With gratitude,
