Welcome Back to School!

Dear Supporters,

As summer officially winds down and the start of the new school year ushers in autumn, we wanted to take the opportunity to share some recent developments we've made with regards to our programming. We're grateful to have members of our Community of Learners make unique contributions which each help us continue to refine the Tutorpedia Foundation model and better serve students.

**TF Program Overview (2013-14 Edition)**

  • We have discontinued the student application process for our inaugural "scholarship program" which awarded free tutoring on an annual basis to under-resourced students from across the Bay Area. We made this shift to increase student impact by better leveraging our tutors' time through the clustering of students at individual sites; this represents a shift in our model in favor of deeper collaborations with fewer program partners. We have grandfathered our relationships with existing TF Scholars receiving tutoring scholarships.
  • This year we plan to provide 120 students with over 3000 hours of service which represents a 33% increase in TF Scholars and 60% time increase in high quality personalized tutoring.
  • We hired new site coordinators and lead tutors for our program sites!  These roles represent greater leadership opportunities for our tutors as we strengthen our relationships with partners in the community and measure impact on students through program data.  We welcome Paula (Canal Alliance), Colin (Sophie Scholars), Elisa (Mission HS), Liz (Huckleberry SF), Molly (Sacred Heart Prep), and Ariel (Bay School) to their new positions and wish them good luck with the new school year!

**Become a Volunteer Tutor**

Tutorpedia Foundation is looking for volunteer tutors to help us at our tutoring program at Mission High School (MHS)  in San Francisco this year.  Tutors are needed to work 1-1 with 10th grade students on academic subjects and school success at MHS.

  • Programming occurs Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:45-2:30pm. Volunteers are asked to make a commitment to work with students 1 or 2 days per week.
  • Program begins September 16, 2013 and ends May 23, 2014, with no programming the weeks of Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day, and April 1st (for spring break).
  • Tutors must have solid understanding of Algebra as it represents the greatest academic need for our students; however, tutors will also be able to assist students in other areas including reading comprehension, writing, critical thinking, organization, time management, and study skills.
  • Tutorpedia Foundation will provide training and support for volunteers: our Site Coordinator is a 15+ year credentialed veteran teacher.
Interested in becoming a volunteer tutor? Please email Director of Programs David Taus at david@tutorpediafoundation.org.

**Thank you for support!**

Did you know that more than half of our financial support during the last fiscal year came from generous individual donors?!

Here's what 2 of our supporters, Dawn and Steve Mesite (pictured) had to share about why they chose to donate to Tutorpedia Foundation:

Dawn & Steve Mesite"When we researched the Tutorpedia Foundation, we learned that this organization is dedicated to serving students who may be unable to meet the financial challenge associated with hiring a tutor. I'm a teacher, and know firsthand the impact that a little extra support can have on a student. Steve and I both recognize the important role that education has played in our own lives. We are so pleased that we were able to include a donation to Tutorpedia as part of our wedding celebration."

Why did you choose to donate?

If you are interested in being further engaged with our work, have questions/comments, please email us at info@tutorpediafoundation.orgWe'd love to hear from you!

With Gratitude,

Tutorpedia Foundation

Happy Summer!

Thanks again for your continued support of our work with under-resourced Bay Area students. They say it takes a village to raise a child, and we're happy to have you as part of the Community of Learners raising our TF Scholars. Because of your generous support, congratulations are in order for TF Scholar Bianca S.!  Bianca recently enrolled at Mercy College, a private liberal arts college in Dobbs Ferry, NY!

Bianca intends to obtain a BA in Social Work at Mercy College, so that, in her own words, she can “help people and make them happy.”

You may have met Bianca in San Francisco back in February at our event Education By Design. She was the brave student who shared her story with attendees and can be seen in the video recap of the night. Tutorpedia Foundation has worked with Bianca since 2011 to provide her with one-on-one tutoring to assist with school work and SAT preparation.

During this past year, one of our partners, Dr. Amy Morgenstern of Blue Star Admissions Consulting, donated her time to Tutorpedia Foundation to provide one-on-one counseling to Bianca to help her navigate the college application process. We are grateful to have volunteers in our community who compound the work we do with our TF Scholars. To read more about Dr. Morgenstern's work with Bianca, please visit our blog.

The entire Tutorpedia team is proud of Bianca's incredible resolve and remarkable accomplishments during this journey. We wish her the best of luck at Mercy College and beyond.

Thank you again for your support of our mission. Your support allows us to provide personalized academic support and other educational services to students in our community who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford the extra help. We hope that with your continued support, we will be able to share more success stories as more of our students graduate high school and head to college.

If you'd like to learn more about opportunities to get involved, please email us at info@tutorpediafoundation.org.

Thank you for your continued support!

We are so grateful to have generous supporters like you!

In February, we reached our initial project goal of $10,000 thanks to your contributions! We've since decided to expand our GlobalGiving project goal by $5,000 for 2013. Every year, Tutorpedia Foundation receives applications from deserving low-income students who need extra support to succeed in school. In 2012, we received over 50 applications from students that we did not have the resources to support. With every $1000 raised, this ongoing project will provide a year's worth of free, one-on-one tutoring for one student with an exceptional tutor who can help him or her excel both academically and in everyday life.

About two weeks ago, on February 28th, Tutorpedia Foundation hosted Education By Design-- our third annual fundraiser and conversation on personalizing education at the Autodesk Gallery in San Francisco. The event featured a series of short talks by dynamic speakers focusing on the most effective methods we can use to make learning personal and customize education in real, relevant, and rigorous ways for all students.

Bianca, a high school senior and Tutorpedia Foundation scholarship recipient, spoke about the impact of her experience with her tutor, Aaron. Because of generous donors like you, Bianca has been able to work with Aaron over the last year and a half and during that time her goal of attending college has become attainable. To get a sense of the vision and scope of the Education By Design, watch our recap video on Youtube at http://youtu.be/U6CIYjaN01g. Please also check out the photo album we posted on our Facebook.

If you'd like to see what our featured speakers had to say, links to full videos of each talk are found below:

We greatly appreciate your support and dedication to our mission.

Sincerely,
Tutorpedia Foundation team
