How your donations have helped this year

We wanted to say thank you to all of you for your support over the last year. Happy Trails Riding Center has had a great year and I wanted to share a few accomplishments with you. In 2013 we grew our staff and added an instructor, Ellen Van Nood. We provided approximately 300 riding lessons, we held our summer and fall camps, created a new class to help people build confidence and trust through equine assisted learning, held our ride-a-thon, movie night, fall dance and holiday party. We started a new fundraiser, "Cowboy Casino".

But more important than the numbers of things we did is that we continue to make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities and special needs. I've included a school project that one of our riders created about how Happy Trails is her oasis. I hope you have a chance to read it and see the pictures we've attached. We are making a difference and I am very thankful for your help in making this happen.

                              My Oasis

The place I feel safe and my emotions can run freely would be Happy Trails.  The barn is my oasis because I feel comfortable and open to myself when I am there.  This is my favorite place to be when I just need a break from my life.  Therapeutic horseback riding was the best thing that ever happened to me.  I get really excited when I get to go to the barn and nothing can bring me down.
When I go to Happy Trails, the first thing I see is the arch of trees forming a tunnel and the mossy old fence with the splintering wood.  I breathe the dusty air while I drag my feet into the drenched mud pathway.   My leather boots leave behind footprints as I walk into the barn.  The flies are swarming around the hay and the tack room kittens are chewing on the braided reins.  My horse’s silk fur is glistening in the sunlight as I brush him.  The rusted bit slides into my horse’s mouth when we put on the reins.  I mount onto the shimmering saddle and take him to a trot.  When I am trotting on Kobe in the cold arena I feel like I am flying.  When the lesson is over I hop off and bring his head to my chest and gently step away.

Being at the barn has changed my life.  I have learned so much about horses and how to take care of them.  If I couldn’t go to the barn I don’t know what I would do.  My family and I have made lots of great friends at Happy Trails.  Everyone needs an oasis because you need a place to feel safe and just be you.  You need to have a place to express your feelings and to be happy.  Happy Trails is absolutely my oasis because it makes me happy and I can visit there all the time.  Happy Trails is my safe place, a place I can escape from my life, a place to be me, my oasis.

2014 will be great it's the year of the horse!

Thanks again for making our programs possible!

Fall Fun at Happy Trails Riding Center!

We kicked off fall with a barn dance for people with disabilties and special needs -it was so very much fun! We hosted a fall party for children with cancer. Our pumpkin carving and riding camp was attended by superman, a cat, a unicorn, and many with mustaches! We wish you a safe and fun Halloween! We are looking forward to ending the year by celebrating the holidays at Happy Trails Riding Center (save the date, Saturday, December 7th from 2-4). Fall is a time of change and we are proud of the changes that happened this year at Happy Trail with the addition of a new instructor and training of one of our volunteers with disabilties to assist in our classes. In 2014 we will add a third Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) instructor.

Thanks for helping bring joy to many in our community! You are making a difference in the lives of people with disabilties and special needs!

End of Summer & Fall Fun!

smiles at Happy Trails

We have been blazing new trails out here at Happy Trails Riding Center this summer. We added a new instructor who will be offering a fall class on equine assisted learning. The focus will be on trust and confidence building. We  wrote a grant and sent one of our volunteers who has disabilities for training to help as an assistant instructor in our lessons. He has been an inspiration to many of our riders and is helping a lot!

In addition to our therapeutic riding classes, we had our music therapy and riding camp, movie night and ride-a-thon this summer and are looking forward to a fall. We have a barn dance for people with disabilities and special needs planned for September 14th with the City of West Linn Parks and our fall pumpkin carving and riding camp planned for October. Our fall benefit, "Cowboy Casino" will be held on Friday, October 18th at the Ambridge Event Center in Portland - we hope you can join us!

Thanks to globalgiving for helping make our programs possible. The smiles on our riders faces are proof that together we are up to great things.

Happy Trails!
