It is also summer holidays, examinations results for adolescent girls, all these happenings kept us busy during the last 3 months. All the girls who are part of ‘Snehidhi’ adolescent girls association have passed their examinations, particularly those appeared for their 10th standard and 12th standard board examinations. Ms.Neeharika Tummala, a representative from GlobalGiving visited the villages where we work on 4th July 2014. It was encouraging for us.

We have been also continuing our life skill and sexuality education follow up weekend trainings. 120 girls and 30 boys participated in these programmes. Since it is holidays for the adolescents we have organized 10 days community development programmes and 10 days street plays and folk arts programme. 48 girls benefitted from this programme. In the rural area the kitchen garden programme become popular and women are actively involved in that. Nearly 500 families have kitchen gardens in our working villages. Now we are discussing the possibilities of increasing the area and yield so that they can sell their produce to earn some income. For that we are also discussing about forming a Producers company with women as shareholders. In collaboration with Madras Christian College, Bio-technology department we have organized 2 days vermin-composte making training and 80 women participated in that programme. Out of that 20 women were given help to set up the vermin-compost units, once the compost is produced they can sell it in the market, actually Madras Christian College is willing to buy back. We are also continuing our dress making training for women 20 women benefitted from this programme. Our handmade soap unit is also picking up, we could able to sell the soaps to the villagers, even though we are making any profit, marketing it in the local market gives us hope to increase the production and market it. 5 women will benefit from this programme.

Life Skill and Sexuality Education for 1000 Girls (14480)
Update- May 2014
The focus during the last 3 months was more on supplementary education support for adolescent girls because it was annual examinations time. Due to parliament elections the examinations were conducted early, so the girls had lesser time for preparing for the annual examinations. But in spite of that the girls were actively participated in organizing and celebrating International Women’s day in their living areas. We started using internet and DVDs to provide supplementary education and employability to skill for adolescent girls. It is great advantage for the girls.

Computer skill Training for girls
We have received support from Cognizant Technologies company to buy 4 new computers and that helped us to provide computer skill training and supplementary education support for girls. We are also continuing our weekend lifeskill and sexuality education workshops. During this period 85 girls learned computer skills from our two recreational learning centres. 60 adolescent girls attended the weekend workshops. After the examinations we have also organized career guidance workshop for girls studying in 10th and 12th standard. During this period we were contacted by BRISC International Canada, an international organization pioneering in online education As a pilot project 5 adolescent girls of 18 years old were trained in retail salesmanship training and they were also given certificates. We will be expanding this project further by including more girls. The course is in English so initially girls faced some problem, but slowly they adopted to it, it also helped them to learn English. During this year we have organized lifeskill and sexuality education programmes in 3 schools and nearly 400 girls, 100 boy and 30 teachers benefitted from this programme.

After the school final examinations we have organised 10 days community development programme for adolescent girls. They learned leadership skills, folk dance and songs, community issues particularly the health issues of children. 54 adolescent girls both from the slums and villages participated in this programme.

Lifeskill, sexuality education training

We have organised local level mothers meeting in our working area to explain G2G-Girls to Graduates programme, that is supporting girls from 9th standard and above to complete their education up to Graduate level. We have discussed about the finances involved and suggested for a savings and credit programme exclusively for girl children’s education support. Most of the mothers were supporting the idea. We are also planning to create corpus fund to run the G2G-Girls to Graduate programme.
