BARKA Foundation

The BARKA Foundation's mission is to serve as a catalyst for achieving the MDGs in Burkina Faso, West Africa. Our methodology is community-led, grassroots and combines indigenous and modern technologies to develop a set of best practices in areas of clean water accessibility, sanitation, irrigation, sustainable agriculture, women's empowerment, education, healthcare, and renewable energy. BARKA's work is ultimately about co-creating a culture of peace.

Motiaba

Motiaba
Motiaba passed away on the eve of Gobal Giving's March Open Challenge. She was our African mother. She was the first to open the door to her community, a small village where The BARKA Foundation has been returning for 4 years. She cooked for us, housed us, washed our clothes and showed us unconditional love and acceptance. In 2008 she had an amputation of a gangrenous foot. For the next two years she suffered silently without medication, without relief, and without a complaint. Motiaba is a testament to the beauty, kindness and strength of women in Africa. These plastic jugs are used for years and are seldom if ever cleaned or disinfected. With frequent temperatures above 100 degrees F, these containers become breeding grounds for germs and disease. (view small | med | large | orig)
