Programs

Between The Lines - Work with incarcerated parents to record them reading children's books and then send the recording and book to their children to encourage bonding during the incarceration. This program also reaches out to National Guard members when they are deployed. Another program we have is JLP CAREs where we partner with up to six local charities and have one full day of volunteering at all six sites on the third Saturday in October. This allows us to complete major projects for the charities because of the number of volunteers on this one day. Last year we had almost 200 volunteers at five organizations for 5 hours - which was almost 1,000 hours of volunteering in one day! Junior League of Portland also has a program to combat human trafficking in Oregon. There are three parts to our program - education, awareness and advocacy. We are creating an educational film on what young boys & girls should be aware of to not get trapped into human trafficking. We will provide screenings of this film to local organizations (Rotary clubs, Parent-Teacher orgs, etc) who would like to know more about human trafficking and how it affects Oregon. Portland is currently the #2 city in the nation for human trafficking activities (both in the sex trade and for labor trafficking). For Advocacy we are educating our membership on current legislation on human trafficking and how to participate in local government.
