Alive & Kicking Christmas 2013 Report

Thika School for the Blind
Thika School for the Blind

Alive & Kicking has continued to enjoy success throughout 2013, as our stitching centres in Kenya, Zambia build on their past success and A&K Ghana starts to get a foothold in the West African market. They continue to make over 5,000 balls a month, for sale and donation across several African countries, and organise valuable social outreach initiatives. Full reports on outreach projects in Ghana and Kenya will follow; check our Facebook and Twitter and News pages for updates.

Ghana Health Outreach

A&K Ghana is currently performing its first major health outreach programme. Having built up production capacity and begun to develop sales partnerships, now is the perfect time to increase our social impact through health awareness work. Up to 75 coaches from Greater Accra will be trained in educative football drills which increase understanding of HIV and malaria; how the viruses work and how they can be prevented. Working with partners ORPED Sports, the coaches will develop skills which they can use with their teams going forward. Tournaments will be organised between the coaches’ teams and over 900 balls, printed with simple health messages, will be donated.

Kenya Visually Impaired project

Working closely with the Angus Lawson Memorial Trust, A&K Kenya is currently running an innovative programme allowing visually impaired children to participate in sport. Using specially made ‘sound balls,’ which contain ball bearings and allow players to rely on hearing rather than sight, 400 children and their teachers will be given an introduction to blind football and the ability to take it forward themselves. It will provide an opportunity for visually impaired children to take part in organised sport, often for the first time.

A&K Kenya Commemorative Balls

Alive & Kicking has continued to enjoy success throughout 2013, as our stitching centres in Kenya, Zambia and Ghana go from strength to strength. They continue to make over 5,000 balls a month, for sale and donation across several African countries and organise valuable social outreach initiatives.

Business-Charity Partnership Award

Our partnership with John Lewis has achieved a great piece of recognition after picking up the Institute of Fundraising’s ‘2013 Best Business-Charity Partnership Award.’ The award was presented at a ceremony in London and was the culmination of lots of hard work in both the UK and Kenya.

Alive & Kicking balls were on the shelves of a British retailer for the first time as a result of the ‘Balls For Africa’ initiative. The partnership resulted in a major order for A&K Kenya, sustaining employment for 50 stitchers for nearly 2 months, and resulted in thousands of balls being donated across Kenya.

Hendon United SC tournament

Alive & Kicking teamed up with Hendon United Sports Club to run a football tournament in Matangulu, a town in Kenya’s Machakos district. The tournament involved 11 local teams competing in league and knockout games over two days and created a real buzz among the local community.

Kenya turns 50

In December this year, Kenya will celebrate 50 years of independence. To celebrate the occasion, A&K Kenya has launched a limited edition commemorative ball, which is on sale now in Nakumatt stores across Kenya.

British 10k London

A dedicated team of Alive & Kicking runners completed the British 10k London run in July, raising over £4,000 in the process. Lots of hard work and training went into the run and fundraising efforts and the preparation was needed as temperatures rose well over 30 degrees during the run. A huge thank you to all those who took part!

Thank you

A huge thank you to every one who has supported Alive & Kicking so far this year, we look forward to our next update in three months’ time.

Alive & Kicking June 2013 Report

Zambia Road Show
Zambia Road Show

Alive & Kicking had a dynamic start to 2013 and it is great to say that we’ve managed to sustain this positive progress. Thousands of balls continue to be stitched in Kenya, Ghana and Zambia, fuelled by an ever growing demand, and our health road show in Zambia resulted in a huge increase in HIV awareness. This momentous streak of success has also seen Alive and Kicking be nominated for the ‘2013 Best Business-Charity Partnership Award’.

A&K Zambia HIV Awareness Road Show of the Central Province

In May, Alive & Kicking completed its HIV awareness road show in the Central Province of Zambia; proving to be a resounding success. The scale of the event allowed us to bring HIV health awareness to some very remote places (where it is desperately needed), visiting areas such as Chibombo, Kapiri Mposhi, Liteta and Kabwe.

Working alongside Tackle Africa, A&K organized football and netball tournaments that were accompanied by voluntary HIV counselling and testing (VCT), allowing individuals to discover their HIV status.

The road show also taught local football coaches how to teach football drills that embodied information and lessons regarding the different aspects and threats of HIV. These teaching techniques stay with the coaches, giving them the skills to raise HIV awareness among others they coach in the future. This means the road show will have a lasting impact on the education of HIV within the region

Business-Charity Partnership Award

Our partnership with John Lewis has been shortlisted by the Institute of Fundraising for the ‘2013 Best Business-Charity Partnership Award’

The ‘Balls For Africa’ initiative saw balls on the shelves of a major British retailer for the first time. The partnership has been highly prosperous for our social development goals creating a major order for A&K Kenya; sustaining employment for 50 stitchers for nearly 2 months, and resulted in thousands of balls being donated across Kenya.

‘Balls For Africa’ are currently on sale for £20, on a buy one and donate one basis, at John Lewis stores nationwide or online. The winner of the award will be announced on the 1st of July.

2012 Annual Review Published

Our annual review, which was published this month, has shown the truly momentous progress Alive & Kicking has made in 2012. Our partnership with John Lewis saw our balls in a major British retailer for the first time, A&K Zambia completed a successful health road show; promoting HIV awareness in many regions and a third stitching centre was created in Accra, Ghana.
