Mission

Playing For Change is a multimedia movement created to inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music. The Playing For Change Foundation (PFCF) was established in 2007 and is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. Our mission is to create positive change through music and arts education. We support music schools and programs that are created and operated by the local community and then purposefully connect those communities around the world. To date, 8 music schools and programs have been created in countries including South Africa, Ghana, Mali, Rwanda, and Nepal. 600 children participate in regular music instruction. We have plans to expand several of our existing programs and to partner with new local programs worldwide. *GUIDING PRINCIPLES FOR OUR PROJECTS* *USING MUSIC TO TRANSFORM LIVES AND COMMUNITIES: Caring adults encourage discipline, joy, and personal expression through music and arts programs. Programs emphasize tolerance and shared understanding as methods for solving problems. *CONNECTING PEOPLE and COMMUNITIES: Cameras and other technology empower individuals and communities to tell their own stories. Children in different countries and schools learn about and get to know peers who live in dramatically different regions and circumstances. *ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT: We use local materials and labor when building, utilize local teachers and administrative staff, provide living wages, and create opportunities for earned income through performances and creating costumes, instruments, and art for sale. *LOCAL LEADERSHIP: Programs are led and affirmed by local village and community leaders.

Programs

**Programs in Nepal** TINTALE VILLAGE MOTHER'S SOCIETY: A small group of determined women in Tintale Village, Nepal, are using drama, song, dance and music as a tool to educate young girls and their families about sex trafficking, including the ways girls are lured away, and the incredible hardships they endure in the hands of traffickers. Devi Karki directs the Tintale Village Mother's Society as they travel to remote villages in eastern Nepal using music as a source of healing and inspiration. UDAYAPUR MUSIC PROGRAM: This program is located in Katari, Nepal, in the Udayapur district, where some children walk two hours each Saturday to attend music classes. Formerly in Tintale Village, the program's move to Udayapur has enabled the school to expand its reach to more people in the region and offer larger classes to serve more students. Classes are offered in harmonium, singing, madal drum and guitar. MITRATA NEPAL MUSIC PROGRAM: Mitrata means friendship in Nepali. Started in 2000, this very special orphanage in Kathmandu now provides shelter, medical care and educational opportunities for over 100 children. The Mitrata children are eager to learn and play music. PFCF provides flutes, harmoniums, drums, and sarangis for the aspiring students who receive lessons from talented teachers and musicians. HARI KUL MUSIC SCHOOL: Hari Kul and his family operate a humble music shop in the picturesque Lalitpur district of Nepal. He personally makes and provides most of the music instruments utilized in our Nepali music programs. Hari has taken in many children in need of support, and freely teaches them music in his shop. **Programs in Africa** ECOLE de MUSIQUE de KIRINA: The village of Kirina, Mali, has carried its history through music and poetry for over 1,000 years. The music school will help the youth of the village carry this valuable tradition into the future. The school offers classes in kora, djembe, balafon, dance, chant, music theory, English and French. BIZUNG SCHOOL of MUSIC and DANCE: Tamale, Ghana, is hometown of the PFC Band's percussionist, Mohammed Alidu. The school offers music and dance classes rooted in the traditional style of the northern region of Ghana. It is the first music school and the first tuition-free school in the region, offering many students their first opportunity to attend school. NTONGA MUSIC SCHOOL: The first PFCF music program opened its doors in 2009. Located in the Gugulehtu township, 10 miles outside of Cape Town, this music school offers classes in music theory, rehearsal, and performance to students aged 7 to 18 and also serves as a community center. INTORE CULTURE and MUSIC CENTER: PFCF and LEAF International are partnering to create a program that will provide traditional drumming and performance classes and new opportunities for Rwandan youth, including those affected by the 1994 Genocide and AIDS epidemic. 70% of the Rwandan population is under 30 years old and many live without proper housing or education; the program will offer a brighter future for the youth and the community.
