The Ariela Foundation

Our main objective is to assist youngsters of Ethiopian origin with promise for excellence in innovative ("ground breaking") career paths to fully fulfill their potential and maximize their personal and professional growth. The creation of such success stories can have a great impact on their immediate surroundings by creating true role models for other Ethiopian youngsters and Israeli society in general. Excellence comes in many forms including studies, arts, sports and community leadership.

                                                                                                                                   August 2012

Dear Supporters of the Ariela Foundation,

We continue to be extremely grateful and appreciative of your donations that are helping to improve the lives of young Ethiopian Jews that will become future role models for their community.

The Ariela Foundation promotes excellence amongst Ethiopian Jewry. Our goal is to create change in the lives of Israeli youngsters of Ethiopian origin who show potential to excel, as a way of fomenting full social and economic integration. We provide guidance, while nurturing personal growth amongst participants. We expect our participants to become outstanding citizens with high moral values, who contribute to society and serve as positive role models. All of this is aimed at creating change at the personal level, within the family, in the community and throughout Israeli society.

In this update we would like to share with you one of our success that involve one of our Maof Program participants, Tadela.

Tadela is a high school student from Beit Shemesh (a small town between Jerusalem and Tel aviv) and an outstanding cyclist that was accepted to the Israeli National Youth Cycling Team.  With the right support and hard work, he stands a chance in representing Israel at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

When we began working with him about two years ago, despite his athletic excellence, his performance in school was very poor. One of the conditions we established for his participation in Ariela activities was to improve his school grades.

As part of our assistance package for Tadela, we bought him competitive bicycle, provided one on one tutorial lessons and ongoing mentoring to help him make smart decisions regarding his personal development.

We are now very proud to report on his amazing progress in school. When comparing the 2010-2011 school year to the 2011-2012 school year, his improvements were as follows. He raised his grade point average in English from 57 to 82 and from 60 to 75 in mathematics.  In language studies, he raised his annual average from 40 to 67.

If Tadela continues improving himself, he will not only become a leading Israeli athlete, but also obtain a high school diploma and serve as a role model for other youngsters.

Thank you once again for your ongoing support that is helping to change the world.

In this update, we would like to share with you the personal success story of Heleny, one of our participants of the Star Program activities in Jaffa.

Heleny, a 15 year old student at the Tzaitlin School in Tel Aviv, immigrated to Israel with her family in 2006 and currently lives in Jaffa as the oldest of three siblings. She provides great assistance to her family by fulfilling day to day chores at home. Heleny joined the Star Program in 2010 and receives assistance that includes tutorial lessons and personal mentoring. In addition, she takes part in a weekly field orienteering workshop and a weekly empowerment workshop which focuses on acquiring life skills.

She is a responsible and serious student that recently achieved a grade point average of 87 in the 2011-2012 school year. Since joining Ariela, there has been significant change in the way she addresses her studies and the way she perceives their relevance to a successful future. Heleny is a very significant and dominant participant within her Star Program group where her positive contribution is of importance to group dynamics. Her personality is outgoing, enjoys helping others and displays great confidence in public speaking.

Heleny believes in herself and wishes to pursue her dream of working in the film industry when she grows up. She currently takes part in a film workshop and also likes to dance and sing.

This is just one of the many lives your donations are helping to change.

Thank you once again for your ongoing support that is helping to change the world.

Star Program Update - June 2012

                                                                                                                         June 2012

Dear Supporters of the Ariela Foundation,

We continue to be extremely grateful and appreciative of your donations to the Star Program which now operates in three separate municipalities (Ness Tziona, Tel Aviv – Jaffa and Gedera) where it is changing the lives of dozens of middle school and high school students of Ethiopian origin. Through your donations, you are helping to improve the lives of young Ethiopian Jews that will become future role models for their community.

Throughout the last few weeks, Ariela continued to deliver dozens of different activities within the framework of the Star Program including weekly after school science workshops, weekly field orienteering workshops, weekly small group tutorial lessons, weekly self-empowerment workshops, parenting workshops, light meals for participants, dozens of one on one tutoring/mentoring sessions, overnight field trips, enrichment activities, guest volunteer lectures regarding life skills, material assistance for educational supplies and giving back to the community activities.

Some of our latest achievements include the following:

-One participant received a grade of 100 in mathematics (he received special additional assistance in preparation for his test).

-One participant began preparing for Bagrut (Israeli high school diploma) with an emphasis on physics (5 point matriculation), a subject he had not studied before.

-One participant improved his grade in mathematics from "Fail" during the first quarter to 65 during the second quarter.

- Solid progress was achieved terms of strengthening the national Israeli identity of participants which sometimes feel marginalized in terms of their self-identity.

-As a result of one on one mentoring work, many participants showed an improvement of self-image and self-confidence (this was expressed by significant actions of self-initiative and overcoming shyness to publicly express opinions).

Attached you will find some of the latest pictures which we hope will illustrate some of the activities and great results we are achieving thanks to your kind help.

Thanks once again for all of your ongoing support and for playing an active role. Please do not forget that all donations given on the 13th of June will receive 50% matching from Global Giving.
