International Disaster Volunteers (IDV)

At IDV we believe that to provide meaningful relief and reconstruction assistance to disaster affected communities around the world we have to do more than reconstruct buildings. We need to understand and address the factors that made a community vulnerable to the disaster in the first place. Our work will be organised with these factors in mind so we can effect change that far outlives our presence.

Thanks for supporting Coleen!

Her sign means "Thank You" in Tagalog
Her sign means "Thank You" in Tagalog

Thanks so much for support evacuees like Coleen. Because of your generosity, we’ll be able to stockpile food for her in a purpose built evacuation centre.

That food will be available when the next flood comes and forces Coleen and her family to leave their home. Evacuation will never be easy for Coleen, but your generosity means that Coleen and her family won’t go hungry.

We’ll send you updates about how your gift is changing the lives of Coleen, her family, and families like them right here on GlobalGiving. Should you ever have any questions about how we’re using your donation, please don’t hesitate to email Emma@IDVolunteers.org. We’d love to hear from you!

One last time, thanks so much for ensuring that Coleen and her family won’t go hungry during floods.

A Warm Welcome to Kristelle!

Tomorrow is a great day to support Kristelle!
Tomorrow is a great day to support Kristelle!

The HTDC family keeps growing! Recently we welcomed HTDC’s newest child - Kristelle. She’s from the town of Fond-de-Negres about four hours outside of Port au Prince.

After Kristelle’s mom left the family, her father struggled to care for his children. He couldn’t afford to send Kristelle to school, feed her properly, or even watch over her to ensure she would stay safe. With Kristelle hungry, in ill health, and out of school, he decided he had to give her up if she were to have a future. He left her at HTDC, saying he wanted his daughter to get the education he never had.

Kristelle is still settling into her new life. Thanks to donors like you she’s been enrolled in school and is making friends. She’s a big help with the younger kids, and is fast becoming a favorite with the orphanage staff.

Your generosity has made Kristelle’s new life possible. Thanks so much!

While the HTDC orphanage is investing in its chickens and bus business, the kids still need donors like you to ensure that they have the food, education, and health care they need.

Tomorrow, GlobalGiving is matching all donations by 30%. This means that tomorrow, your $10 donation is actually a $13 donation – and that $13 is enough to feed Kristelle for over a week!

We hope you’ll give $10 tomorrow and share this update with friends and family to support kids like Kristelle.

Thanks so much for all you’ve given, and very warm regards!

Just $13.75 to Change Osnard's Life!

Just $13.75 to give them a month of education!
Just $13.75 to give them a month of education!

Thanks to your generosity, the English in Mind Institute continues to change the lives of adults living in poverty in Port au Prince, Haiti.

One of the unique features of EIM and English language skills in general is that students don’t even need to finish a multi-year course for their language skills to start improving their lives.

For example, take the 33-year-old beginner student who recently filled in our anonymous student survey. He’s just coming to the end of his first year of learning English. He’s still a beginner, and speaks only basic phrases, but they’re already helping him earn a more prosperous living. Here’s how:

"I have a little store where I sell drink and food provisions. I use the little English I have as bridge with the foreign people [in my area]. I sell a lot of [soda] and beers because of my English!"

We hear stories like this one all the time – and you made them all possible! Thanks so much for all you’ve given to EIM.

The students are busy preparing for their end of year exams, and we’re confident that, despite some nerves, they’ll do wonderfully! Exams mark the end of the school year at EIM, and that means we’re starting to think about admitting more students next year.

How many students we can admit depends entirely on funding. Happily, thanks to GlobalGiving, it’s now 30% easier to ensure that EIM keeps growing and changing lives. Tomorrow, GlobalGiving will match your donations by 30%! That means that if you give just $13.75, we’ll be able to give a student like Osnard a month of English education!

We hope you’ll give what you can tomorrow and share this project with friends and family.

Thanks so much, and very kind regards!
