July Update on TanzSolar's Home Lighting Program

NIWA Solar 300 Light
NIWA Solar 300 Light

TanzSolar was Awarded the 2013 National Energy Globe Award for Tanzania!  Your support makes this work possible, so THANK YOU!

TanzSolar continues to work with homeowners to provide affordable solar lighting.  We are trying out a couple of new products this quarter; the NIWA 300 solar light and a DASOL lighting package (see photos).

The NIWA light is a single, very bright light with an outlet for cell phone charging.  It comes with a solar panel that can be roof-mounted or simply put out in the sun on the ground every day for recharging.

The DASOL package is a home lighting system with 3 lights, a solar panel and cell phone charging.  This is more expensive than the single-light system but offers the ability to provide light in 3 rooms.

The TanzSolar team will take these lighting products to the village markets to sell them at a subsidized price.  These lights are life-changing for the village residents, and they simply cannot afford them without the subsidy afforded by your generous contributions.

We are nearing the end of this project!  TanzSolar will continue to focus on our Solar-Schools4Africa project and our upcoming Solar-Healthcare4Africa project.  We thank you for your ongoing support and hope that you will help us wrap up this project and continue to support the work that the TanzSolar team is doing, sustainably improving the quality of life for thousands of rural Tanzanians.

July Update on Tegaruka Secondary School

Proud teacher with TV
Proud teacher with TV

News Update: TanzSolar is the proud recipient of the National Energy Globe Award for Tanzania for 2013!

On 28th May 2014 a visit was made to Tegeruka to inspect the school's solar system.   We found that it is functioning in good order.  The solar lighting is enabling students to return to the school to study at night. Unfortunately this is only useful for the boy students as it is too dangerous for the girls to walk to school at night.  We would like to make take-home lights available for the girls.

Students are now able to do experiments during the day using the solar lights. The solar system supports the school's Laboratory and has allowed it to add an electronic balance scale (TP-B500) that it is being used to measure samples that are needed in doing laboratory experiments.  The teachers are using the lights at night to prepare laboratory tests for the next day's experiments.

The administration block teachers are now able to work late into the night to prepare lessons for the next day.  This has helped them to perform their work in a better way. They have also been able to use a TV system and DVD player for teaching purposes. The TV system also allows teachers and students to watch movies on Saturday during the day.

CLASSES

In classroom "A" 2 lights are replaced by Tanzsolar and there is a need to replace another 3 lights for the classroom to be fully lighted. In class"B" 3 lights are replaced and there is a need for another 3 lights to be replaced for the classroom to be fully lighted.

Overall the teachers and students are pleased to have the solar lighting systems that help them in many ways. The teachers have also selected the top girl performing students from each of the four forms and Tanzsolar will provide a small solar light to each girl student so that they may study at home during the night.

TEACHERS HOME SYSTEMS.

In addition to the school primary photovoltaic systems, the teachers who live on campus were each given a Home Solar Power System.  \One teacher's home system has been damaged and needs to be replaced.  At present the teacher is charging a car battery and using solar system lights. The headmaster's home system is in need of a new battery. The second master's home system isn't working due to a bad connection to the solar panel. The panel has been returned to the office for repair.  It was suggested by the teachers that for security of the panels, a security light should be added behind the Administration block.

OFF CAMPUS TEACHERS

The teachers who are not living on campus have expressed a need for portable solar lanterns. This may be solved by making available the purchase of the NIWA lights that will soon arrive at Tanzsolar.

Solar Schools Report, March 2014

The science lab is open in the evenings.
The science lab is open in the evenings.

The solar system at Tegaruka Secondary school has been greatly appreciated by both the school's faculty and the students.  Teachers are now available to assist students with their studies and for the first time these students are able to study in the evenings.  All of the teaching staff is very appreciative of having light for working in the evenings and for the ability to charge their phones on site rather than making a trip to town.

On March 3, 2014 TanzSolar made a routine maintenance visit to Tegeruka Secondary School to evaluate the operation of school's solar power system.  Maintenance issues continue to come up, even though we think of solar photovoltaic systems as requiring very little upkeep.  There are no issues with the solar system itself, however the light bulbs continue to fail.  TanzSolar has returned and replaced many of the original LED bulbs with new, better and brighter bulbs.  These are specified to have a minimum of a 3-year lifespan, so we hope to have solved that problem for 3 to 5 years.

We thank you for your donations and for making this project possible.  Your continued support will help us to maintain and operate this project and to bring solar power systems to additional rural schools.
