Starting a food security initiative

Vegetable seeds distribution
Vegetable seeds distribution

Dear Friends,

Greetings and thank you very much for your support to provide food security to poor earthquake survivors in Nepal. This time we were able to reach-out and distribute together with local and international volunteers vegetable seeds and garden tools to 120 families located in Tigani village in Bhaktapur District, 45 minutes by public transport east of Kathmandu. Most of the residents are traditional farmers while a few are government workers and some engaged in the private sector. The vegetable seeds and mustard leaf, bitter gourd, carrots, ladies fingers and beans. The garden tools are mainly wooden rod dibble and sprinkler.

In this village, only 40% of the families own the land, the rest has to lease and pay the landowners up to 20% of their annual farm income. They earn about 4000-5000 rupees per month, and have to rely on middlemen to sell their produce as most of them don’t have any marketing idea. After the earthquake, 65% of the houses were totally destroyed and aside from a few concrete houses, the rest were partially damaged.

Again thank you very much.

Very sincerely yours,

Cora

Technical education for Haiyan survivors

Technical education students
Technical education students

Dear Friends,

Greetings from Leyte and thank you very much for your continuing support to our project providing education to very poor girls affected by the typhoon. Without your kindness they will not be able to go to school. While our main aim is to send the students to college education, we realize that there are short technical courses running from 6 to 12 months that the students can enroll and hence find jobs early on. In this case we have decided to send 17 girls to technical schools sponsored by the Technical Education Skills Development Authority. The schools are located in the cities of Tacloban and Ormoc. The courses that the girls are taking includes culinary arts, computer hardware servicing, agriculture technology and tourism. Aside from their tuition, we also provided for their uniforms, weekly allowance, school supplies and technician's tools.

We will continue this important initiative as this will make the girls productive, provide them with a good future and help them economically.

Again, thank you very much.

Very sincerely yours,

Cora

Giant rainwater harvesters

Dear Friends,

Warm greetings from Leyte and thank you very much for your continuing support to our initiative here. Our work here is continuing because the damage caused by the typhoon is massive and covered a very large area affecting millions of people. We are continuing our implementation of the communal hand-wash for schools and this period we have installed 7 hand-wash in 7 different elementary schools. We realize during installation the need for water in some of the schools so we also install rainwater harvesters made of iron and concrete. Rain is plentiful since this month is the start of the rainy season. One of our rainwater collectors can store 10,000 litres of water and this can be used to fill the container for the hand-wash as well as for general hygiene use. This period we have installed 1 rainwater collector in Amagos Elementary School in Barangay Amagos, Bato, Leyte and this will serve the needs of 173 school-children.

Thank you once again for your continuing support.

 Very sincerely yours,

 Cora
