News from Cambodia & Running for a Child!

Pon - a new scholarship recipient in Phnom Penh
Pon - a new scholarship recipient in Phnom Penh

Hello CCEdFund Family!

We can hardly believe that we are half way through March and that the end of the 2011-2012 academic year is around the corner.  With your support, we were able to send twenty-two amazing but impoverished Cambodian students to school this year in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, Cambodia!

Currently, GlobalGiving's representatives are visiting CCEdFund's partner schools and children's centers to learn more about our amazing students and where they study.  They have promised a full report on the teaching and learning that they see, but in the meantime, we thought we would catch up with you.

We have had an incredible academic year that began with a new partnership in Siem Reap.  The New York International School is now where twelve CCEdFund scholarship recipients are studying a full Khmer curriculum in addition to lessons in English.  We are eager to evaluate this partnership this year and we will keep you posted.  In Phnom Penh, our four students at Beltei continue to rank in the tops of their classes for grade six.  Pon, one of our newest scholarship recipients, is thriving in her new school funded by a CCEdFund scholarship.  With your support, we hope to provide four additional scholarships next year.  However, we only provide scholarships when we are financially certain that we can assist the student through the completion of his/her level of study.

CCEdFund's Students, Flooding in SE Asia, & Giving

Flooding in Siem Reap
Flooding in Siem Reap

Hello CCEdFund family!

As you probably have heard in the news, there has been widespread devastation in Cambodia due to the flooding in the region.

Over 200 people have died in the flooding in Cambodia after the Mekong River flooded its banks from heavy rainfall.   The water has not receded and is causing illness and property devastation throughout the area.  A Cambodian ambassador indicated that 15 towns have been destroyed including the roads to and around them as well as all the farm land.  Fortunately, China, the U.S., and Kuwait are providing some much needed aid to help the flood victims.

We are thankful for the news that CCEdFund’s students remain safe and healthy.  We will continue to check in on their safety and the progress of the cleanup efforts.  The Director of one of our partner organizations sent the attached picture which has a view of the river in Siem Reap from the roof of the children’s center.  For other students, access to school has been shut off due to the high waters. “1.2 million Cambodian people affected by this year’s flooding. More than 46,000 households have been displaced and 247 have died.” (IRC in Cambodia)

Somalin’s father wrote: “We are safe but it was still flooding in Siem Reap. Somalin is staying at home. Pearen and my sister take care of Somalin and Somalen because the children were playing in the water when it began flooding. Some children died in Siem Reap River.”

Students - Somalin's Update
CCEdFund currently provides scholarships for twenty-two students to attend school in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh!  Our schools are close partners who support students' needs to maximize their chances of academic success despite their lack of schooling before receiving scholarships.

One of our first students, Somalin, made an important transition this year.  She has received a CCEdFund scholarship since 2007 when she was 3 years old because of her obvious curiosity and her parents' dedication to her education (even though they struggle to survive).  She is only one of 2 CCEdFund students who lives with her family (other students live in children's centers because they were orphaned). Her father Vutha, a tuk-tuk driver is a former teacher, and devotes much of his free time to his supporting his daughter's education.

Previously, Somalin attended a school that taught in English during the day and studied Khmer with her family.  This year, now a third grader, Somalin is studying in English in the morning, and in Khmer in the afternoons.  We are very excited to see how her dual language curriculum progresses and we are thrilled that she has the opportunity for formalized education in both langauges.  We will keep you posted as we continue to work to ensure that all of CCEdFund's students have the educational opportunities they need to be come leaders in their communities and country.

Back to School...for more students this year?

Tony, Sreyheng, and Channa talking about school
Tony, Sreyheng, and Channa talking about school

Happy August from CCEdFund:

The new school year has begun in Cambodia!

We are off to an exciting start with our students in schools in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.  CCEdFund provides scholarships to Cambodia's future leaders and these students have survived growing up on a garbage dump, being orphaned and impoverished, or being trafficked.  Despite all of these obstacles, our students finished the last school year near or at the tops of their classes (!) at exceptional schools because of your continued support.  Over the summer, instead of taking well-deserved breaks from studies, our students continued to seek out experiences and opportunities to continue to learn.  For example, Kouch sought out tutoring for her math studies and Somalin worked with a teacher on her Khmer reading and writing.

We have even more exciting news - we have many new scholarship nominees from our partners who look like excellent candidates for CCEdFund scholarships.  We love receiving and reviewing scholarship applications to find those ambitious students who will change Cambodia.  However, we will not grant scholarships unless we can support the students through the completion of their studies.

Even though the school year began 3 days ago, we hope you will consider supporting additional students with CCEdFund this year through a monthly donation.  Though the tuition costs vary by student level and school, generally a $25/month donation for 12 months will support the scholarship of one of our students this year.  Will you please consider helping again this year so that we can send great news to some of our applicants?

We look forward to writing again soon with news about our students' progress in the first quarter!

Warm regards,
Carrie and Jennifer
