New Community for Children

New Community for Children (NCFC) provides children and youth with learning experiences that build up their academic, social, and creative skills. We believe that excellent educational opportunities are the key to helping families break out of the poverty cycle. We offer creative hands-on learning in our after school program, and advocate for healthy families and challenging schools to support that goal.

Literacy Springs Forward at NCFC!

Check out our new leveled library!
Check out our new leveled library!

Dear Friend,

Happy Spring! With all the winter weather we've been having in Washington, DC, the staff and students here at NCFC are ready to welcome spring with open arms! In addition to the warmer weather, we are also looking forward to the grand unveiling of our brand new on-site Leveled Library! Our staff has been planning and preparing this space for our kids throughout the winter, and we are so happy to finally share this space with our kids and families.

Our leveled library is a great tool to ensure that all of our students will have regular access to an abundance of reading level-appropriate books. In this way, they can continue to build upon their gains in literacy with each level they meet and exceed! We always strive to provide our kids with tools that will really help them to be successful now and in the future. This leveled library is a great way for us to keep our kids actively engaged in reading and learning.

NCFC could not provide these types of resources without the generocity of supporters like you. We are so greatful for your continued support. Thank you!

Keep Kids Reading through the Holiday Season!

Our students selecting books at our Fall Festival!
Our students selecting books at our Fall Festival!

NCFC is quiet today. So quiet in fact, that you can hear NCFC staff rapidly typing on our keyboards from anywhere in the building. Winter break has started for our students. They are at home enjoying time with their families and friends. They are also spending their time reading, thanks to the free books they've received from NCFC!

This year, NCFC has set out to support our students and their families in creating at home libraries. One of the best ways to reach our goal of ensuring grade level proficiency in reading by grade three is by providing kids with opportunities to read whenever and wherever they are. Having access to books at home that are grade and reading level appropriate fosters a love of reading in kids, which in turn makes literacy a priority in their homes.

Since October, NCFC has donated FOUR books to each child in our program, with more expected to be distributed throughout the school year! These books have helped to set the foundation for an at home library for each child. This would not be possible without the generosity of supporters like you.  On behalf of the staff at NCFC, the students and the families we serve, THANK YOU! We are grateful for the wonderful contribution you've made in support of our program. Best wishes for a happy holiday season and a joyous and prosperous new year!

Falling for Reading at New Community for Children!

A new school year has begun, and New Community for Children is continuing our committment to ensuring our kids reach grade level proficiency in reading by 3rd grade. Over the past summer, NCFC engaged a literacy coach who individually assessed the reading levels of all our students in grades K - 2. To bolster the success of our literacy gains over the summer, NCFC will be hosting a Fall Festival featuring a book fair for our awesome kids in late October! (Shhh! It's a surprise!) Students will be able to choose books that are appropriate to their reading level, and use those books to create their very own home library!  Of course every fall festival has to have fun and games too, and this one will be no exception.

At NCFC, we know that one of the simplest and most effective ways to help students read better is to create opportunities for them to read more, especially with their families. Allowing kids to create libraries at home will sow the seeds that will grow into love of reading that they can share with their families, both present and future. Those seeds will harvest a positive impact on literacy in our community for generations to come!

It is your support that continues to yield a bountiful harvest for the futures of some great kids! We are so grateful for your contributions, and thank you for being our partners and friends!
