New Community for Children

New Community for Children (NCFC) provides children and youth with learning experiences that build up their academic, social, and creative skills. We believe that excellent educational opportunities are the key to helping families break out of the poverty cycle. We offer creative hands-on learning in our after school program, and advocate for healthy families and challenging schools to support that goal.

South African Educators Visit NCFC!

Our new friends from Pretoria, South Africa!
Our new friends from Pretoria, South Africa!
On Monday this week, New Community for Children hosted visitors from Dimakatso Primary school in Pretoria, South Africa. Robby Chauke, Principal of the school, came along with four teachers to see New Community for Children in action. The group is on a tour of Washington, DC, Chicago and New York to see best practices in out of school time.

During their visit the teachers were excited to learn more about the social enrichment activities offered along with academic support. One noted that at Dimakatso Primary school the after school program provides only tutoring but now she will incorporate more fun options to keep kids engaged. We were happy to host our international visitors and showcase our best!

At New Community for Children, we welcome visitors from near and far to our regular Kids in Motion tours. Our one-hour tours take place twice a month from 4:30PM - 5:30PM. To RSVP to one of the tours listed below or schedule a private group tour, please email rjohnson@ncfc-dc.org.

New Year, New Learning Opportunities at NCFC!

Our kids were really impressed with the bat fiddle

Happy New Year! It's our first week back from winter break, and exciting things are already happening at New Community for Children!

New Community for Children was treated to a performance by National Symphony Orchestra violinist Glenn Donnellan! Glenn came to perform for our kids as part of NSO In Your Neighborhood 2013. This year's NSO community engagement initiative brings free performances and educational activities to U Street/Howard/Shaw.

The theme of Glenn's performance was Follow that Fiddle. The kids learned all about the history of the violin, also known as the fiddle. Glenn played a few songs and taught the kids how to make some really cool sounds with a fiddle. The kids were really excited when Glenn made the fiddle sound like a galloping horse!

This is just one of the many exciting things happening at New Community for Children.  We invite you to come see our kids in motion! Our one-hour tours take place twice a month at 4:30 pm.

A Year of Thanks!

Winter Fun in the Nation
Winter Fun in the Nation's Capital!

As we prepare to celebrate the holiday season and welcome a new year, we at New Community for Children wanted to take a moment to share our gratitude to everyone who has supported us this year!  It is through your support that we have been able to provide an academically and socially enriching program to 100 kids after school and during the summer in 2012.  Although we are proud to provide programming that is intellectually stimulating to our children, we are more proud to be a nurturing and supportive safe space for our kids.  We are able to meet the many needs of our kids because of you!

On behalf of all of us at New Community for Children, we are so grateful for your generosity! We could not make such a great impact on the lives of the children and families we serve without your support.  Thank you!

We wish you a wonderful holiday season and a joyous and prosperous new year!
