Mission

Vision: -For all children in South Africa to be able to experience quality education. Mission: Green Shoots Education Services (GSES) endeavours to uplift and empower by collaborating with local systems to: - Provide innovation in educational pedagogy and teaching practice - Provide personalised professional development programmes for teachers & school management - Utilise appropriate technology to maximise and accelerate learning - Provide reliable and efficient technical support services - Produce individualized curriculum programmes -Design and implement educational monitoring systems - Construct and promote programs that involve the broader school community GSES employs a holistic approach through quality education as a contribution to poverty alleviation. GSES was formed in May 2012 from a group of education and technology consultants who are passionate to facilitate change in South African schools.

Programs

GSES started working with 16 Primary schools (6180 learners, 181 teachers) and this has recently risen to 67 Primary schools and 27, 000 learners. The schools that we currently support are located in the lower socio-economic areas of the Western Cape. We support schools in communities that were previously disadvantaged communities (due to the political history) within the South African context. GSES implements a comprehensive Mathematics development programme that integrates online learner activities and assessments, teacher professional development, per learner performance analysis, targeted learner support, school management development and facilitation of professional learning communities. The aim is to produce a constant, incremental improvement in Mathematics teaching, learning and consequently Mathematics results. GSES Maths Curriculum Online (MCO) incorporates structured online courses, online assessments and learner progress data analysis, complimented by teacher professional development courses. This comprehensive Programme enables schools to run a structured and accountable Mathematics Curriculum. MCO streamlines and focuses Education District curriculum and management teams support by the continual monitoring of the Mathematics curriculum delivery and learner progress in all cohort schools. The twice termly learner performance breakdown provides extensive reporting and analysis tools which gives the relevant authorities or school management(s) a high-level overview of current learner performances. These tools offer the ability to easily drill down from Education District and school level views to teacher, grade, class and individual learner data. Curriculum managers and teachers can make informed educational and operational decisions based on this real-time information. Learner performance and curriculum content analysis by GSES provides data per child, per class and per topic linked to the South African curriculum. This analysis is accessible to the Mathematics Subject Head, Mathematics Phase head and the subject teachers. Teachers can track class and learner progress with the assessment data and easily group learners to support differentiated teaching based on particular areas of need. Learner and content related interventions can be monitored for efficacy. Professional Learning Communities are facilitated between schools to allow for sharing of best practice and peer to peer support. Leveraging this powerful reporting and analysis, all role players have all of the data, tools, and information they need to identify trends, pinpoint strengths and weaknesses, monitor at-risk learners, and make informed educational decisions. Teacher professional development priorities can be assessed using the comprehensive per child, per question and per class analysis. Impact of the MCO on learners: Teachers report (using an anonymous online survey) that the majority of their learners are: more positive about their Maths ability and more engaged in Maths lessons have a greater confidence when faced with new Maths concepts have a greater understanding of what they need to do to improve Impact of the MCO on Teachers 113 educators questioned using an anonymous online survey reported that participating in the IMP had: increased the number of methods I use to teach mathematical concepts, 81% made teaching mathematics more interesting for me, 80% improved my subject knowledge, 69% improved my confidence in teaching mathematics, 58% External exam data: The Province average increase in the pass % for grade 6 Maths Annual National Assessments from 2012-2013 was 9.8%. The average increase in 16 initial Primary schools was 32.6%
