Oxcart parading
This is Mario, the "boyero" (oxcart man), in a parade with his beautifully matched oxen. They are working up on the David Alvarez corridor hauling all of the seedlings up to the planting site. You will see him at work on the updates from the field at "Connecting Forest Islands in Costa Rica" project page. The working wagon isn't as pretty as this one, but the team is the same.
Golden Beetle
He lives at La Reserva and is seen here sitting on a Yos leaf. We plant many seedlings of this tree. There are several species of Yos in Costa Rica. They provide berries and leaves for the Two-toes Sloths to eat and they only lose their leaves for a short time in November. For this reason they are very desirable for shade during the bright hot, dry summers.
Jose planting
Jose, the guard at the Tronadora High School. He helped us all day last August 1, to reforest the adjacent pastureland owned by the high school, without pay. It's amazing how good it makes everyone feel doing this work, even though it is dirty and tough.
Purple Hummingbird Flower
What beauty!! The center is reaching out for us. Can we reach back?
Treating Chichas
Daniel Spreen and Roberta treating Chichas's hands at his enclosure.
