Programs

Makindu Children's Program (MCP) is a charitable 501(c)3 non-profit organization headquartered in Eugene, Oregon that supports a day resource facility called Makindu Children's Centre (MCC) in a rural region of eastern Kenya. The Centre provides nutritional, medical and emotional support, access to basic education, and opportunities for vocational training for over 1,200 destitute AIDS orphans and other vulnerable children. The children live in guardian homes in the community, and can come to the Centre daily for food, recreation, bathing, and laundering facilities, emotional support, and crisis intervention. Makindu's program activities includes outreach for community sensitization on health matters, psychosocial events, caregiver trainings on home-based care and behavior change communication, home visits, health referrals, guidance and counseling, as well as coordinating community seminars on a variety of relevant issues. Water provision and sanitation efforts have included construction of a large community reservoir tank for Makindu, providing potable water to 20,000 local villagers. Makindu actively promotes advocacy work for children, women and other vulnerable groups, and participates in area celebrations such as Day of African Child, Malezi Bora, World AIDS Day, and Youth Week. Makindu Children's Program is currently raising funds for the following projects: 1. Borehole construction, which will provide affordable access to water for the Makindu region. 2. A capital campaign for a new building that would house its ever-expanding pre-primary school and provide space for community events, workshops, and vocational trainings.
