Mission

Zimkids Orphan Trust is a neighborhood-based safe haven for orphaned children in impossible circumstances. We are committed to ensuring that the children and their caregivers have access to food and medical care, as well as creative, recreational, vocational and educational opportunities and training in the tools essential for self-reliance so they can grow into productive, healthy adults who are literate, energized, assertive and ready to take initiative for themselves, their families and their community.

Programs

We provide a wide - and growing - array of programs: 1. Pre-school: We offer an early childhood education program (including computer training, arts, reading, and numbers), as well as recreation and food, to our cohort of 3 - 7 year olds. 2. Vocational: We provide training in construction skills including, carpentry, welding, electrical, solar power and design, to our 13 - 18 year olds. 3. Education Assistance: We tutor children at all levels, pay school fees for our neediest orphans and give stipends for those with test scores high enough to qualify for Advanced level courses. 4. Library: We have over 1,200 volumes including encyclopedias, textbooks, novels, and children's books, along with numerous games including Scrabble and other educational games. 5. Computers: Our tech center has 14 laptops that we use to train children of all ages. 6. Sports and recreation: We have soccer and netball fields, as well as an obstacle course. 7. Food Production: Our children maintain a field and greenhouse watered through drip irrigation. The produce supplements our feeding program and provides food to our families. 8. Psycho-Social Support: We conduct home visits throughout the year to assess needs and meet challenges and provide the requisite support. One of our staff (a former beneficiary) is in counseling training and works with all our kids. 9. HIV Awareness: We conduct workshops on HIV prevention and issues related to treatment of our HIV+ kids. 10. Medical: A private physician treats our children as needed and works with our staff, who have been trained in first aid, to assess, care for, and/or refer children. 11. Clothing: We provide donated clothing and shoes as needed to our children and their caregivers. 12. Outreach: To teach our children about giving back, we regularly visit the city dump, where our older beneficiaries assess the needs of the 400 or so people living there in dire circumstances and distribute food and clothing. 13. Girl empowerment program: We offer a special targeted vocational and educational training for our girls, with the goal of economic independence. Areas include welding, sewing, construction skills, and business management.
