Mission

We build Beat Making Labs in communities of need, giving young people the tools to make beats, record songs and share their voices with the world. A Beat Making Lab is an electronic music production studio small enough to fit into a backpack. Using a laptop, microphone, keyboard, and beat making software; we teach youth how to create music, and share it through our distribution partner, PBS. Beat Making Lab started as a class in the music department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, but quickly developed into a movement. We built our first international studio at a community center in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, with amazing results. The studio remains in Goma for free, community use. Our dream is to design an open source beat making software and mobile app, to foster music creation in communities internationally. It's an ambitious project and we need your help to accomplish it. Imagine a world where people in opposite corners of the globe exchange beats, lyrics and ideas with one another. Music can transform individuals and communities. We're building tools to harness this potential and give everyone the opportunity to make beats.

Programs

We conduct Beat Making Lab programs in countries around the world. To date we have Labs at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at a non-profit called Yole!Africa in the Democratic Republic of Congo. With support from PBS Digital Studios, we are in the process of building three additional international Beat Making Labs in countries yet to be determined.
