Mission

Our Mission: Hunger Relief International (HRI), a relief and development organization, is dedicated to alleviating the impact of hunger and malnutrition on the lives of children and their families as the first step in a long-term strategic plan to achieve family and community self-sufficiency. Our Vision: We seek a world in which children, their families and communities have access to basic necessities including nutritious food, clean water, sanitation, education, and health care.Hunger Relief International's vision is to enter an impoverished community and one day to leave that community self-sustaining, economically viable and food secure. In addition HRI food is procured in country or even regionally and is crucial to the accomplishment of HRI goals and core objective. Not only does it improve and strengthen the market for local farmers, it also creates new job opportunities in the country and creates stable markets for local farmers. Sourcing locally ensures an effective and efficient distribution cycle, and it brings food quickly and directly to the communities and partners with whom we work. In many instances the cost of shipping and transport surpasses the value of the food product. By purchasing food locally we eliminate other costly considerations including import tax, clearance fees and the risk of loss or theft of shipments, to name a few. Additionally, local food is culturally appropriate and the population is accustomed to and enjoys the taste

Programs

Hunger Relief International is committed to alleviating childhood hunger through nutritional feeding programs, improving access to education, establishing income generating projects and implementing critical development activities that will create self-sustaining families and communities around the world. Our programs include: Nutritional Support-- School Feeding Programs and Pre-K Feeding Program (for children under 5) in Guatemala, Orphanage Feeding Programs in Haiti, Vegetable Garden Initiative for orphanages and schools in Haiti and now extending to Guatemala, as well as a Life Skills Program to ensure that Haitian orphans have the opportunity to build a better life as they enter adulthood and can no longer be supported by the orphanage. Income Generating Programs--Hen and Egg Project for Women, Goat Project for Haitian Farmers, and soon we hope to pilot our Micro-Credit Initiative for Women in Guatemala. Community Development-- Energy Efficient Stove Initiative; bringing sustainable stoves to families with children suffering from respiratory illness in communities supported by our nutritional support programs. 4Her Program empowering young girls in Guatemalan villages where our nutritional support programs exist to stay in school, The 4 Her program focuses on 4 main areas: health, education, equality and hope. We also partner with groups and donors to oversee the provision of critical support to the communities where our nutritional support programs exist for example; a much needed new school kitchen to facilitate an existing school feeding program, a new school building for a community that desperately needed to replace a dilapidated building, immediate help for an orphanage following Tropical Storm Isaac that needed shelters for 48 children after serious damage to the their dormitory building.
