Maddie's Blankets

Maddie's Blankets provides community service opportunities for underserved populations - children, senior citizens and disabled individuals through the making of simple fleece blankets that are then donated to animals and children in need. If you can tie your shoes you can make a difference and if you can't travel - we bring the blankets to you to work on.

Programs

When I was 10, I was looking for non-profit organizations where I could volunteer. The majority of the organizations didn't want me because, at the time, I was too young. Around that time I also visited an animal rescue operation and I realized that often animals have nothing to sleep on but a thin pillow case. In 2007, I started "Maddie's Blankets" because I wanted to help out in my community. "Maddie's Blankets" was created to give rescue animals a soft blanket to sleep on and to allow young kids an opportunity to make a visible difference in their community. While originally designed to make animal blankets, I have expanded "Maddie's Blankets" to make comfort blankets for children in foster care, emergency, and transitional housing situations. In 2009, "Maddie's Blankets" became a 501(c)3 organization. Since then, I have expanded to include senior citizens and developmentally challenged kids and adults to volunteer with us. Both of these populations have time and energy to donate towards charity work but have very limited opportunities. They can't drive to me - so I bring my blankets to them. Maddie's Blankets has made almost 10,000 blankets since its inception in 2007 and today we rely on an army of volunteers to make this happen. Our first set of volunteers help us prepare the blankets. These are typically middle and high school students doing community service hours for school. We are never in short supply of these volunteers and often don't have enough fleece to keep them busy. The second set of volunteers complete the blankets. This activity is done in groups - from martial arts schools, to girl and boy scouts, church youth groups, summer camps, local businesses and government organizations, sports teams, and senior citizen groups. There is such demand that I typically schedule events over a month in advance. I also hold large events through Volunteer Fairfax for Global Youth Service Day and Martin Luther King Day of Service.
