Mission

The Discovery Eye Foundation created the Macular Degeneration Partnership program to raise awareness of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), educate patients about the disease and provide support and resources to them and their families. The overall mission of Discovery Eye Foundation is to support research, education and advocacy related to sight-threatening eye diseases and their treatments, improving the quality of life for patients and their families.

Programs

The Discovery Eye Foundation funds eye research and maintains two patient education/advocacy programs, the Macular Degeneration Partnership and the National Keratoconus Foundation. Eye research programs are undertaken at the University of California, Irvine at the Gavin Herbert Eye Center. Research projects include retinal regeneration and the use of stem cells to repair and restore vision, the genetics of macular degeneration, and treatments for ocular herpes. The Macular Degeneration Partnership maintains a comprehensive and up to date website to educate patients and their families about age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and to raise awareness of AMD and the importance of dilated eye exams. A monthly e-newsletter provides individuals with updates on research developments, new treatments and controlling the lifestyle factors that contribute to AMD. The Partnership staffs a toll-free "warm line" to provide more personal information and support. Individuals can speak with a knowledgeable and caring professional who can answer their questions and provide individualized resources. Email interaction is also available, allowing for sharing more detailed information and links to resources. Monthly support group meetings take place in three locations throughout Southern California. These popular programs provide not only information and resources, but a safe space to share experiences and make friends. Expert speakers present information about living with low vision, recommended nutrition for eye health, state resources available to the visually impaired, and research updates. Large Print materials are distributed through the mail and at local health fairs and national meetings. Self screenings for macular degeneration are provided at these venues. The largest event is the annual AARP Event and Expo, where the Macular Degeneration Partnership has created a Vision Pavilion and interacts with thousands of at-risk seniors. The Partnership provides patient education materials to ophthalmologists, optometrists and retinal specialists and works with industry and other nonprofit organizations to spread the word about AMD, dilated eye exams and low vision rehabilitation. The National Keratoconus Foundation provides similar services to those with keratoconus, a corneal disease that affects people in their youth and early adulthood.
