Partners for Haitian Children

Founded in 2006, PHC supports community-based institutions which educate vulnerable Haitian children so that they can reach their potential and become builders of a new Haiti where justice and peace thrive. Currently, PHC partners with the Haitian Congregation, the Little Sisters of St. Theresa (PSST), an indigenous Haitian congregation which has been serving the poorest of the poor in Haiti since 1948 and enjoys the trust of the communities where it operates. The education that they provide stresses values and ethics such as dignity of each person, respect for life and sense of the common good.

Mission

Founded in 2006, PHC supports community-based institutions which educate vulnerable Haitian children so that they can reach their potential and become builders of a new Haiti where justice and peace thrive. Currently, PHC partners with the Haitian Congregation, the Little Sisters of St. Theresa (PSST), an indigenous Haitian congregation which has been serving the poorest of the poor in Haiti since 1948 and enjoys the trust of the communities where it operates. Programs

PHC has been supporting through grants a co-ed primary school whose enrolment increased from 250 in 2006 to more than 700 in 2012 an orphanage for 60 girls ( up from 45 in 2006) in Petite-Riviere de l' Artibonite, a town of about 20,000 inhabitants in the center Haiti where poverty is endemic. Although students are expected to pay a yearly tuition of US$30, at most a fourth of the parents are able to pay fully school fees and buy books and supplies for the children. Basically the school and also orphanage depend entirely on donations to function and face severe resource constraints. It is against this backdrop that PHC's assistance over the past six years has focused on the following core programs: 1) provision of daily hot meals for the school's children, many of whom suffer from hunger and malnutrition; 2) funding of teachers' salaries still below the poverty level of $2 per day and teacher training; 3) p rovision of school books and uniforms for orphans as well as scholarships fororphans attending secondary school; 4) financing of some infrastructure projects such as renovation of classroom, provision of school furniture, completion of a perimeter fence to help secure the campus.
