Education Through Music, Inc.

Education Through Music (ETM) was formed in 1991 with a mission to promote the use of music in inner-city schools and schools in disadvantaged areas, as a means of enhancing students' academic performance and general development. At ETM, we believe every child deserves a well-rounded education: one that includes music both as a subject in its own right and as a means of supporting learning in other areas. ETM makes music education a reality for thousands of children who would otherwise have limited or no exposure to the arts, uses music instruction to strengthen students' ability to learn in all areas, and works to build schools' capacity to sustain programs.

Mission

Education Through Music (ETM) was formed in 1991 with a mission to promote the use of music in inner-city schools and schools in disadvantaged areas, as a means of enhancing students' academic performance and general development. At ETM, we believe every child deserves a well-rounded education: one that includes music both as a subject in its own right and as a means of supporting learning in other areas. ETM makes music education a reality for thousands of children who would otherwise have limited or no exposure to the arts, uses music instruction to strengthen students' ability to learn in all areas, and works to build schools' capacity to sustain programs.

Programs

ETM's primary activity is the New York City partner school program, through which we form long-term partnerships with elementary, middle and K-8 schools that serve at-risk student populations and have been previously unable to provide comprehensive music education to all students. We tailor programs to meet each school's needs, address all members of the school community, and assess programs on an ongoing basis. ETM recruits and employs music teachers so that every student can receive music as a core subject; we provide music teachers with ongoing training, professional development and mentoring; we provide classroom teachers with professional development; and we provide principals with management and leadership guidance. To build capacity, ETM addresses advocacy among staff, parents and community members, and helps schools with strategic planning. In addition to its core partner school activities in New York City, ETM offers consulting services, such as professional development, curriculum development, and model replication. In 2006, ETM licensed the independent organization, ETM-LA, to replicate our model in California. ETM also shares experiences at conferences and by participating on committees and in roundtables.
