Final Report!

Dear Donor,

With your help our project was fully funded!  Thank you so much for your belief in Social Promise and St. Jude Children's Home in Uganda.  Over the course of the two years that this project has been active on GlobalGiving, you have donated more than $10,000!

As a result of your donation, teenage girls are attending secondary school year after year, others have attended vocational and professional schools, and children with severe disabilities finally have wheelchairs and newfound mobility.

Every year when a member of the Social Promise Board visits are nonprofit partners in Uganda we are newly impressed with their staff, facilities, and innovative ways of helping their communities.  All the wonderful progress that has been made at St. Jude Children's Home in recent years - the new small family homes, the updates to Consolation Home, the ability to keep accepting orphaned babies - is a direct result of your donations. Thank you.

Although we could always accept more donations to this ongoing project to support education, housing, and nutrition for the children at St. Jude's, we have supplied their Consolation Home branch with all the wheelchairs they currently need so we are closing down this project.  Thank you for allowing these goals to be met!

As we always tell you, the close relationship between Social Promise and St. Jude Children’s Home allows us to confidently assure you that the investments you have made in the future of children in northern Uganda will have great yield. You are literally saving lives. Orphaned babies are being housed, fed, clothed, and cared for. Children are being given an education and thus a chance at future employment so they can one day provide food, housing and an education for others. Wheelchairs are absolutely transforming the lives of people with paralysis. Mothers are giving birth in safety. Children are receiving immunizations.

Thank you in advance both for sharing the stories of our amazing partners with your friends and for continuing to support their life saving work with your donation. As always, if you have any questions at all about Social Promise, our partners, or Uganda, please contact me or read more about our work on our website www.socialpromsie.org .

Take care,

Sharon

Wheelchair partnership accomplished!

Dear Cherished Donor,

Before you donated to Social Promise, there was no primary school at St. Jude Children’s Home. Teenage girls at the orphanage could not attend secondary school. Children with severe physical disabilities had extremely restricted mobility and couldn’t pay for wheelchairs. Your donation turned all of that around.

Last June I once again visited with our partners in Uganda and saw the amazing impact of your donations. The St. Jude Primary School – a direct result of your generosity and forward thinking – now offers a highly sought-after education to the children from St. Jude’s Home as well as to those in the local community. Over 36 children now attend secondary school and four more are in vocational or professional schools as a direct result of your donation. Perhaps most impressively, you bought 35 wheelchairs for people with disabilities. Can you imagine how dramatically you changed a life? I saw it in person during the summer and it was inspirational. I saw children who once were confined to a life spent on the floor of a mud hut now able to move. While in Uganda, I was able to help start a relationship with a local nonprofit that is now providing low cost wheelchairs to Consolation Home, within St. Jude Children's Home.

The close relationship between Social Promise and St. Jude Children’s Home allows us to confidently assure you that the investments you are making in the future of children in northern Uganda will have great yield.

As always, if you have any questions at all about Social Promise, our partners, or Uganda, please contact me!

Take care,

Sharon

Strength in a Time of Sadness

Board members meeting with Director of St. Jude
Board members meeting with Director of St. Jude's

As spring abruptly changes to summer, we at Social Promise are still hard at work, focusing our efforts on continual progress and innovation. Currently two of our board members, including our Executive Director, are on site in Gulu, Uganda following through with our ongoing projects and meeting with our local partners and community leaders to further Social Promises’ ability to make effective and culturally appropriate impacts within the community. Our fellow board members have continued to keep us updated on the progress of the projects and recently had an extensive meeting with the Director of St. Jude’s Children’s Home, Julius Oola. As is often the case, his report was filled with stories of success and triumph as well as new concerns and ongoing struggles. Tragically, one of the youngest children at St. Jude’s was recently involved in a cooking accident that resulted in her eventual death.   This immensely sad event serves as yet another startling reminder of the thin line between life and death the children in Gulu are faced to straddle on a daily basis. The administration of St. Jude’s as well as all of us at Social Promise will continue to pursue improvements to the safety of all that call St. Jude’s home.

Although none of us are immune to the unpredictable and often unfair calamities that life can confront us with, we at Social Promise still strive to mitigate the challenges faced by the children at St. Jude’s. With your continued support we can continue to lift physically disabled children from the dirt and in doing so, provide them independence and a chance at a life without immobility and unnecessary deformity. Providing these children with proper wheelchairs not only saves lives, it resuscitates the spirit. We don’t claim to have all the answers to the problems facing these children but we are committed to partnering with them to solve the issues that THEY feel most passionately about. We believe in providing these children with every opportunity to succeed in whatever path they chose to pursue. We invite you to continue to take part in forsaking hopelessness and standing alongside Social Promise and the children & administration of St. Jude’s Children’s Home as we forge on into an exciting future. Be on the lookout for our next Global Giving update, as it will contain a more in-depth report on the events surrounding our boards’ current site visit. Thank you as always, and may you all continue to be champions of hope.
