Mission

Our role is to eradicate the Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) epidemic that has widowed and orphaned entire communities, and in doing so disrupt unjust economic systems in Nicaragua that impose abusive conditions upon laborers. We will achieve this through investigative research, epidemiology studies, education, and consumer empowerment. We hope for a world eradicated of man-made epidemics where workers are not employed in hazardous circumstances without adequate safety precautions; and where we as consumers empowered by information, hold corporations responsible for exploitative practices, so that human rights and fair trade policies are universally implemented. La Isla Foundation seeks to empower the ignored, educate the uninformed, and identify oppressive labor practices while developing innovative tailor-made solutions. We are here to eliminate situational obstacles in order to allow workers and their families achieve their full potential.

Programs

La Isla Foundation oversees multiple fundraising, medical research, and community support programs in our effort to identify and eliminate the cause (s) of CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) in Nicaragua. Our fundraising activities include on site individual and group Spanish classes in Leon, as well as an option to take these classes online. We also offer salsa and cooking classes. La Isla Foundation is able to support the communities affected by CKD in many ways. Our volunteers and staff offer educational and recreational opportunities to the community; for example public health education programs, computer skills, and English classes. Recently La Isla volunteers and community residents renovated an unused building into a library and community center. Extra-curricular activities, such as clubs for arts and sports, as well as a soccer program are offered for the school children. In order to more fully understand the epidemic of CKD in the community, we have collaborated with the Autonomous National University of Nicaragua-Leon (UNAN) to conduct a study on the geographical scope of this epidemic. We also conducted a study into the causes of this epidemic with Boston University as well another study with UNAN on the psychological impact of CKD. In addition, we have partnered with other local NGOs to promote alternative income opportunities for the residents of the community, such as teaching welding to young men.
