Mission

The HeartGift Foundation mission is to provide lifesaving heart surgery to disadvantaged children living in developing countries where specialized medical intervention is scarce or non existent. Each day, hundreds of children around the world are born with life-threatening heart conditions. Children born in the United States receive immediate care and go on to live long and healthy lives. However, for children living in third-world countries, treatment is either unavailable or critically inadequate, resulting in the deaths of thousands of children each year. The HeartGift Foundation brings children from around the world for free surgery to correct life-threatening heart defects. HeartGift has four chapters to allow us to serve as many children as possible. These children come for surgery because their home countries lack adequate health care. In many cases we are their last hope. When they leave us they head home with repaired hearts and renewed hope for the future.

Programs

The HeartGift Foundation comprises pediatric surgeons, cardiologists, anesthesiologist and physicians who are dedicated to providing life-saving heart surgery to children with no other access to cardiac care. All participating physicians donate 100% of their time. All medical services are provided at no cost to the child's family. The Heart Gift Foundation works with referring agenices all over the world who bring children to our attention who are in need of open heart surgery. Our medical committees review each case to determine if the childs medical condition is a match for HeartGift. If so, we oversee the visa process and provide transportation for the child and parent/guardian to fly to one of our chapter cities. They are provided with a host family and the pre-op appointments begin within a few days. A surgery date is determined and the open heart surgery is performed in the partner hospital. After discharge from the hospital the child continues to recover while enjoying visits from volunteers. In total the child and parent/guardian are in the US for approximately 5 weeks.
