.MISSION STATEMENT: "To establish an infrastructure of accessible services for persons with intellectual disability living in poverty using as far as possible manpower and resources available within target communities, with active community participation, leading to an inclusive society"
Since we were established in 1981, we have been able to identify two crucial areas of service, i.e early identification and inclusive education for the preschool children .Consequently our services focus on identification of infants and preschool children through surveys and community awareness programms. Additionally , the realization that many families cannot provide supportive services to their child identified with intellectual disability or even if identified with symptoms of delayed development due to poverty, we have now set up a support service to their mothers which trains them in an income generating skill and enables them to earn some income. The intangible result of this is the improved self worth of these mothers who often suffer from constant discrimination and segregation, abusive and alcoholic husbands and general non acceptance. These mothers are also required to sit in on the therapy sessions of the children identified and who are provided with rehabilitation and therapeutic services through a five member multidisciplinary team of professionals. Services provided are speech therapy, occupational & and physio therapy . Psychological assessments dictate the functional level of the child which guides the planning of the academic curriculum .Pediatric assessments guide the placement of the child in relevant service units. Many of the mothers are also inducted as survey workers and trained to conduct surveys fora house to house survey of families within selected area. This provides additional income .The most recent service has been conducting workshops for providing information about intellectual disability and dispelling the negative and faulty thinking which prompts the lack of support and acceptance of these disabled in the community. This includes outreach not only to the community at large but to local mainstream schools. The very exciting result has been the building of an extremely positive relationship with these schools such that we are now able to admit children with intellectual disability who reach sufficient academic level to enable admission in these main stream .
