Raising Awareness on Vietnamese Children with Disabilities

Marcia Selva & Tam Nguyen of GCSF
Marcia Selva & Tam Nguyen of GCSF

Dear GlobalGivers,

Global Community Service Foundation had the privilege of hosting a fundraiser for the benefit of children with disabilities in Quang Tri Province with the Spouses of the Vietnamese Embassy in Washington, DC on September 28, 2012.  Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Cuong and Madame Hoang Minh Ha welcomed guests to their residence and opened the evening by showcasing the charms of Vietnam through art, music, dance, fashion and food.  Marcia Selva, GCSF founder & president, introduced a special guest in attendance, Mr. Tam Nguyen, GCSF field representative from Dong Ha.  He spoke to the audience about his work and the ongoing projects in Quang Tri Province.

The final GlobalGiving Bonus Day of 2012 will be on Wednesday, October 17th.  Online donations of up to $1000 per donor per project will be matched at 30% until the $50,000 in matching funds are depleted.  Several donors to the Khe Sanh School Library are military veterans who previously served in Quang Tri Province and still fondly remember the local villagers.  You can remember a veteran with a gift donation entered in their honor on October 17th and delivered on Veterans Day, Thanksgiving or other date.

Thank you for supporting the school children of Khe Sanh.

Khe Sanh Site Visit

Greetings GlobalGivers,

Global Community Service Foundation’s founder and president, Marcia Selva, toured  the organization’s ongoing projects throughout Quang Tri province last month, and I was honored to serve as her guide.  We visited the main campus of the Khe Sanh Primary School where the library will be constructed.  It is located 65 km west of Dong Ha town and about 2 km west of the old battlefield.

We were warmly received by the school's principal, teachers and students.  Some of the children who will benefit from the library are shown in the photo of Ms. Tran Thi Hoai's 5th grade Vietnamese writing class.  Principal Huong  sincerely thanked us for the ongoing effort to raise money for the library and stated, "In many meetings between school management board and parents of students, I get a lot of feedback from them that the school needs to have a library. There are more than 700 students in my school and they do not have access to a library. The kids have plenty of free time and they love to read books and would like to learn how to use a computer and the internet. Unfortunately, funding for the library is beyond our financial capacity. A library would be very beneficial to the local children and help them to catch up with the knowledge that is now accessible by most of the big city children.”

Nearly 50% of the funding needed to begin construction of the Khe Sanh Primary School Library has been raised in less than 6 months.  We are very grateful for your support of this special project.

Progress Report - June 2012

Thanks to your generosity fundraising for the library is off to a great start.  We were able to raise over $4000 from 50+ donors during the first 18 days of the April Open Challenge and earn a permanent spot on GlobalGiving.  The project placed 2nd in the number of donors during the Mother's Day Tribute Card Challenge during May and received a $500 bonus.  Our next opportunity to significantly increase the library funding is through GlobalGiving's Bonus Day campaign on Wednesday, June 13th.  Online donations of up to $1000 per donor will be matched 30% until depletion of the $75,000 in matching funds.  Please help further by forwarding this message to three friends and request they consider bestowing the gift of reading to Khe Sanh's children.  A $15 donation on Wednesday by noon EST will result in a $20 contribution toward the Khe Sanh Primary School Library.  Thank you for your ongoing support!
