We are Common Threads. Mission

We are Common Threads. We teach low-income children to cook wholesome and affordable meals because we believe that through our hands-on cooking classes we can help prevent childhood obesity and reverse the trend of generations of non-cookers, while celebrating our cultural differences and the things people all over the world have in common. Our mission is to educate children on the importance of nutrition and physical well-being, and to foster an appreciation of cultural diversity through cooking. We help bridge cultural boundaries and strengthen our global family by teaching children about their similarities and differences in the warm comfort of the kitchen: Through the simple process of preparing and sharing a nutritious meal, children who participate in our programs learn to connect with their bodies, the food they eat, and the larger world in bite-sized lessons.

Programs

Children who participate in our programming come to our kitchens and embark on a world adventure as they prepare nutritious meals rooted in diverse cultural heritages. Students learn basic kitchen skills, cooking techniques, and the importance of fresh ingredients as they prepare healthy ethnic cuisines together. Chef Instructors incorporate nutrition tips and cultural information into lessons that teach our students how to connect with their bodies, their neighbors, and their world in a healthy way. Classes are offered in 10-week sessions throughout the school-year-fall and spring. Classes meet once per week and are free to students who qualify for free or reduced school lunches. Common Threads currently provides programs in sixteen different Chicago neighborhood locations, four in Washington, D.C., four in Miami, and two in Los Angeles. We also offer two sessions of summer camp in Chicago where campers participate in cooking, gardening, movement, and culture classes designed to provide a full curriculum centered around health, well-being, and cultural awareness free of charge.
