Every year adds new dimension of fury to devastation caused by floods in India. While J&K,Uttarakhand haven't fully recovered from floods in the last 2 years, this year many parts of Tamil Nadu & Andhra Pradesh have seen major damage due to unprecedented rain. People are facing loss of belongings, homes & lives. Access to basic necessities like food, shelter, clothing, clean water, medicines etc has become a big challenge. This project will work to reach basic relief material to affected areas.
Though annual monsoon floods are a reality for millions across India the recent floods in parts of Tamil Nadu & Andhra Pradesh states are a result of an unprecedented rains which brought about unprecedented destruction in its wake. People have been rendered homeless in these floods. Goonj will be trying its best to reach out relief in affected areas in a phased manner. There is immediate need for relief material like dry ration, blankets, tarpaulins, utensils etc.
'Rahat(i.e relief) Floods' will work for recovery & welfare of flood affected. GOONJ will put to work its decade-long experience of disaster relief work. We partner with grassroots agencies for accurate assessment of damage &needs of disaster hit people. Being part of local community, they become crucial leg in distribution chain as they sensitively deal with issue of giving with dignity. Floods have wiped away infrastructure & basic amenities for the masses & things will take time to normalise.
GOONJ will work in a phased manner on relief work. For us, collecting & distributing relief material is only 1st step & slowly with time we will also focus on filling the gaps of the larger relief work. We work for long-term rehabilitation, wherever possible.People have lost everything in floods &they need more than just relief camps to resurrect their lives. Once flood water recede,Goonj engages people in rural belts into rebuilding of local infrastructure under our 'Cloth for Work' initiative.
