Following the devastating earthquake of 7.8 on 25th April, 2015 in Nepal, over 5000 people are reported to be killed, 12000 injured and other 8 million people are affected. Emergency assistance and relief support have been extended but are not sufficient enough to reach to victims in Kathmandu and the surrounding districts. The project will support women and children deprived of government relief due to lack of legal identity and are the target group of Raksha Nepal.
The massive earthquake has caused huge casualties. Emergency assistance and relief support have been extended but are not sufficient enough to reach to victims in Kathmandu and the surrounding districts. The target groups of Raksha Nepal are engaged in hotel, restaurants, sexual exploitation, and being informal workers and lack of legal identity are also deprived to get assistance from state mechanism.
The project will provide direct relief, post traumatic psychosocial counseling and facilitate rehabilitation service to ensure that the women and children are stable enough to lead a normal life. Immediate relief package distribution, counseling sessions to the ones in trauma and facilitating the livelihood mechanism in Kathmandu or their original locations are the major areas the project will work on to solve the problem.
The devastating earthquake has shaken individuals and communities and many women who are members of Raksha Nepal are more vulnerable in this situation. Since the women do not have legal identity the government does not provide them immediate relief or rehabilitation. The project will ensure that they do not fall out of safety net or become more vulnerable to violence, diseases or untimely demise. This will also work on rejoining social fabric and strengthening social harmony.
