Laptops/computer labs will be installed in rural schools in villages near Kumasi, Ghana to enable students to learn the necessary skills to continue their high school education.
In Ghana, it is a national requirement that students pass a computerized exam to enter high school and to move from one grade to the next in high school. Schools without technology are left to teach computer skills by drawing diagrams on a chalk board.
A team of 19 diverse students from Seattle, Washington will refurbish 50 laptops donated by the Gates Foundation and 40 desktop computers. The students will travel to Ghana to partner with the NGO, The Yonso Project to set up computer labs, school staff and students will be taught how to use the computers and cultural exchange between all students will occur. Volunteers from universities will continue to help support the computer labs.
Computer labs equipped with Microsoft Office software allows students to learn basic computer skills as well as how to use Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. This increases the chances of furthering their education and also provides valuable job skills too. With internet connections, teachers have access to curriculum and other current and innovative teaching materials.
