Increase in school enrollment, academic excellence and reduction in hunger related illness has been the result so far. Also, empowering farmers and women who cook these meals is an objective of the project.
62% of Nigerians live below poverty line. The recent food, fuel and financial/ economic crises have highlighted the importance of School Feeding Program as a social safety net for children living in poverty. The lower a family's income, the more they need the children to work for food instead of going to school. Children help selling in markets, on farms or hauling water. Many go without food themselves to save a little extra money for books / pens. And so many families see fruits as a luxury
Children will benefit from a hot nutritionally balanced school meal, addressing the health status of many children and thereby also improve learning outcomes. Also it will improve the enrollment of primary school children in Nigeria and reduce the current dropout rates from primary school which is estimated at 30%. Inclusion of Fruits give the children get a daily dose of vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants that strengthens immune system and ensures their healthy growth and development.
The Daily School Feeding Project which targets Public Primary Schools in Nigeria, will secure the future of the children, reducing greed because of hunger, help children focus on their school work instead of thinking of where their next meal will come from, thereby reducing the number of hoodlums been raised on the streets. Also farmers will benefit from improved access to school feeding markets; and communities will benefit from new jobs across the supply chain such as catering and processing
