South Africa Field Volunteer Job Description


Purpose of the Job:

GlobalGiving is looking for eight (8) volunteers to take part in the first ever South African Field Programme. You will be conducting site visits, focus group sessions and Online fundraising workshops for nonprofit partners. Through your time with GlobalGiving you will be able to:

  • Visit nonprofit projects and hone your teaching skills by offering training and support to existing GlobalGiving nonprofit partners through workshops and identify areas for improvement in their fundraising.
  • Travel through your province and meet with local change makers from the social sector.
  • Receive two weeks of training, one week of which will take place in Johannesburg area or Cape Town and one week online. You’ll gain valuable career-building skills in monitoring and evaluation, online fundraising, measuring impact, presenting, and much more!
  • Flex your writing skills and create posts for GlobalGiving’s the GlobalGoodness or Tools + Training blog.
  • Refine your professional networking and relationship-building skills by supporting potential nonprofits partners in South Africa that would like to join GlobalGiving.
  • Help GlobalGiving better understand the needs of our community by taking part in GlobalGiving’s needs assessment focus group in your province.
  • Present your findings and experience to the GlobalGiving staff after completing these deliverables.

Key Deliverables 

Monitoring and Evaluation: Conduct 3 to 5 site visits each and complete the accompanying assessment.

Capacity Building: Site visits and GlobalGiving Partner Workshops are also a great opportunity to strengthen GlobalGiving's relationship with partner organisations. We take advantage of these meetings to learn more about our partners' fundraising needs and to provide additional advice and support. Field volunteers will support the organisation's staff in understanding crowdfunding better and enable them to succeed in the upcoming contests on GlobalGiving such as Bonus days. This can take the form of an  informal meet-up with existing partners or a workshop. Come up with out of the box advocating tactics to promote  GlobalGiving through community based radio, social media and other mediums.

Focus Group Assessment: Act as the moderator or assistant moderator during the provincial based focus groups.


  • This experience is ideal for a final year undergraduate or postgraduate students pursuing a degree in Development Studies.
  • Experience in nonprofit management, marketing and communications or social entrepreneurship will be an advantage.  
  • Self-starters who have demonstrated the ability to work independently and in collaboration with other team members.   
  • Cross-cultural understanding, responsiveness, and flexibility to changing circumstances (because things are bound to go differently than expected in the field!)
  • Available for a week of online training in May 2017 and a week of in-person training from  25 June to 1 July 2017.
  • Travel experience and knowledge of the province is strongly preferred.
  • Upbeat attitude and a good sense of humour.
  • Relevant local language skills.
  • Volunteers should be prepared to travel and live inexpensively through rural and urban locations in Western Cape, Gauteng, Limpopo and Eastern Cape  during the Winter holiday (3- 13 July). It  would be advantages if you are originally from these provinces or visiting there over the Winter holiday.Travel routes will be decided based on the volunteer’s place of stay and language skills.  


All volunteers will receive a reimbursable travel allowance of up to R700.00 and a stipend of R2 000.00 on completion of the project requirements. All volunteers visiting from outside of the training location will receive an additional R1500.00 travel and accommodation allowance.
