Zanzibar Alternative Learning Pathways (ZALP)

by Sazani Associates

The project targets youth in Zanzibar who are disengaged from secondary school, by provide alternative learning pathways for learning and critical thinking skills development, with progression routes back into formal education. It aims to challenge poverty, youth and gender marginalization , reduce vulnerability to religious radicalistion of vulnerable youth and support the development of State systems in two regions of Zanzibar.

total goal

The islands are increasingly socially unjust and politically unstable. Students who are out of school and poor in Zanzibar are vulnerable to austere or politicized Islam. The two regions of focus, the north region of Unguja island and the South region of Pemba islands have the highest levels of school dropouts and the lowest levels of literacy and school attainment in Zanzibar.

ZALP is a proposed pilot project that builds upon the extensive historical and practical experience of Sazani Associates. It will utilize community networks and links with the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training to design and deliver programs targeting school drop outs in the community. Extensive knowledge of local livelihoods (coastal), culture, and the education system in Zanzibar will further increase the effectiveness of the project.

Long-Term Impact

Communities in Zanzibar have to deal with high levels of poorly educated, unemployed young people who are vulnerable to ongoing radicalisation. High levels of drop out and no system in place to support reintegration into the state system wastes potential and represents a burden on poor communities. Developing a model with 100 young people would enable the government of Zanzibar to develop policy and resources across the region. This would benefit an estimated 1.4 million people.
