We bring healing, teaching, and empowerment to underserved black and brown communities in the NYCmetro area, through in-person (post-pandemic) and online financial literacy programming. We also offer continuing medical education for healthcare workers and free spine surgery for impoverished children overseas. Our goal as an organization is to bridge the wealth gap in the U.S. and eliminate the gap between social and medical resources overseas because we are one global community.
Severe scoliosis shortens lives. Thousands of disadvantaged pediatric patients are diagnosed with moderate to severe scoliosis, are currently on a waiting list for government-sponsored corrective surgery. Children in these situations typically do not receive surgery without desperately needed philanthropic intervention.
Since 2012 Duncan Tree aims to provide free implants to adolescents with moderate to severe scoliosis and other complex spine diseases. The majority of these patients have been on the hospital waiting list at KPH and other public hospitals. Duncan Tree medical volunteers also provide continuing medical education to local hospital staff in Jamaica and the Philippines to help them better manage difficult spine cases with more confidence and better patient outcomes.
Through our project, hundreds of disadvantaged pediatric patients receive deformity surgery. Without intervention, these children face bullying, rejection and the prospect of permanent disfigurement and life-threatening complications as they grow due to progressive spine curvature. Hundreds and medical professionals have received advance training in complex spine case management through free CME courses. Duncan Tree will effectively introduce intraoperative neuro-monitoring as a core skill
