Young Advocates for Peace

by National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV)

Summary

The Young Advocates for Peace program is four day event running concurrently with the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence national conference. Children and youth of all ages, many of them child witnesses of violence against their mother or victims of abuse themselves, join with their peers to learn skills and acquire tools to become activists to end violence in their communities. This supportive and safe environment promotes understanding and empowers them to create social change.

Challenge

Witnessing violence between one's parents or caretakers is the strongest risk factor of transmitting violent behavior from one generation to the next. Boys who witness domestic violence are twice as likely to abuse their own partners and children when they become adults. 30% to 60% of perpetrators of intimate partner violence also abuse children in the household.

Solution

The skills Young Advocates for Peace will learn, the information they will share with their peers, the tools they will acquire will allow them to better address any violence they are personally experiencing, and to empower them to make positive changes in their community to reduce violence there.

Long-Term Impact

The Young Advocates for Peace program is attended by children and youth from all over the U.S. It will not only have a national impact, but as the youth grow into adults the lessons and skills they are given in this program will make it more likely that they continue to work to end violence in the home and community.
